Thermal Paste for Heatsink question

I'm using the stock heatsink/fan for my e6600 and when i got the heatsink, it already had thermal paste on it. I left it on and put a dot of that Arctic stuff on too. Was that a bad idea? Should i have just used that arctic stuff? I know it's really nice.

Yes, you should only use 1. I'd take the heatsink off and clean everything up the reapply some arctic silver

well it might fudge stuff up a bit, since your supposed to wipe the hs clean before applying it, i dont htink it'll do any harm but the temps might be a tad higher, cuz the more of any type of conductor between the cpu and hs means more the heat has to pass through to get cooled

Does anyone know what you should use to take off the old thermal paste? I heard that some people use rubbing alcohol and some cloth. Also how often should you reapply the paste?

Rubbing alcohol is a terrific way to clean off the chip. You should replace the TP every 6-8 months; though it won't hurt much to keep it on longer.

I've left it on for at least a year many times, no harm done. :)

For me I reapply it only when I take the heatsink off.

I haven't changed my stock TP in who know how long. And the cool thing is it still works perfectly. Idles at 25c, under load it doesn't go above 35-40c. :D

I only Change mine when I remove the heat sink and thats not often, I have 3
stock systems that in 4 years hasnt been changed. I know its about time but ummm I guess Im lazy hahaha

I put new TP on mine about a year and a half ago when I fried my processor. I OCed it, temperatures were fine for awhile, then completely forgetting I had it OCed my computer shut off and that was that. Luckily I was able to con Intel into sending me a new one... had to get a techy to vouch for me that it wasn't OCed
