when i play avi's from the web on WMP it plays in bright colours. is this a missing codec and if it sint what is it and how do i sort it? thanks!!!

Usually when you are missing a codec the player is not able to run a certain type of video file. The brighter colors seen have more to do with how the file was originally processed and your own brightness and contrast settings.

I see, thanks!!!

i see now i know what a codec is. so it could be my monitor? when i got it i just plugged it in and that was it. could this be a reason for it? is there any settings that i need to change? DVD's come up fine on the screen. :D

A codec is a small program for decoding video and audio files alike for players like Windows Media Player, WinAmp, and a number of others when the player itself lacks what it needs. As far as monitor settings they are set at default when first new. You adjust the settings there only when needed for the occasion viewing of an off color or odd tinted video files that are not quite the best in appearance. Sometimes that is done for viewer preference alone. The dvds play in one industry standard format most of the time. If someone puts a homemade video on a web site you take your chances on quality there.

From your description of bright colors you could try bringing down the brightness and contrast controls on the monitor somewhat when going to play files at the site. This is what I meant about how they are processed when they are too bright instead of using a standard process for making them. If you are coming across pirated stuff expect poor quality.

Actually, bright videos is usally a driver related problem...or at least the settings. Check it. I know Nvidia had some horrible issues with previous drivers and the gamma settings.

If you had a codec problem, the video just plain wouldn't play. Depending on what all is missing, you might get audio but no video, video but no audio, or neither...

The thing there would be if you were seeing every file having a high hue intensity or just some played when online. As you mentioned dvds play well without seeing this type of problem. Dvds however are played with a direct signal being sent through the video card itself after the player processes a digital not analog encoding there.

WMP doesn't process certain files anywhere near as good as other players as you know by this time. While video drivers can raise havoc with anything video related the type of files run with online players can see garbage playback without anything being wrong on your system. The quality there is quite often beyond your control.

Well then it's obviously not the codec that's the problem (I'd love to know what ass that was pulled out of).

If it's only some that are the problem, that would indicate that the problem isn't with your machine, but with the source. See if it was all of them then we would have to look at your computer as being the problem. However, if it's just some movies, the problem is almost assuredly on their end.

I tell you what. Give me a couple of links and I'll try them out on my computer. If I have the exact same problem you'll know it's them. If not either The Other One or myself can help you track down the source of the problem. :)

It seems someone won't admit when someone else got it right the first time. :P I can image the expression now. " ! he got it first!" Oh well..... :P

You're telling me to stay on topic? The king of misdirection, misinformation, sidetracking and misinterpretation?

lol :D That's funny. :D :D

How many times have I've told you not to talk about yourself when you think you are still standing in front of a mirror? shame on you! :P

When I was in grade school we used to have this stupid saying. "I'm the rubber, you're the glue...bounces off me and sticks to you".

You just gave us the modern rendition of that. Nice job. Like I said, act your age. There's so many people in here a third of your age that act more mature.

There's an old Native American saying that seems to fit best here. "Don't criticise your neighbor until you have walked a mile in his moccasins."! Having had a relative come from a Canadien Sioux reservation reinforces that further.

If you both haven't noticed, this thread has turned into an argument between you two, this is supposed to be a friendly site, right? You're both arguing about staying on topic in a thread about codecs.

Rearding the problem, you may be able to find downloads that will help you at the support site of the media player.

I played it with mine and it seems fine. Bright, vibrant colors. I'm using the K-lite codecs. Try them and see what happens.
