Thinking about building this computer.

My current computer is almost 5 yrs old is getting fairly slow. I built it while in college and had a friend help me out. Now it is time to build something new. All parts are from newegg and links are provided. Let me know if I have something wrong or if you have any suggestions on parts. This will be a family/gaming computer.

Well I think that does it. Software is going to be Windows XP from my last build. I have the CD and Key.

Thanks

As I mentioned in another thread. Consider full HD (1920x1080) for your monitor. That's of course if you can scratch together another $30 (Acer H213H, Asus VH222H). Games are getting fancier, blu-ray is getting less expensive.

Thanks, does everything else jive? I can spend the extra $30 for full HD monitor. I only play CS. I have a family so not a lot of time gaming anymore. I just can't stand the lag and the crappy fps speed. Hell I use a 19" Dell CRT right now and love the color.

What version of XP, is it 64bit? As all your ram wont work unless it is.

Also consider getting a quad, games are starting to come out requiring them so better for the future, that rig would own Counterstrike though lol.

Well that is what I am playing. I will check the 32 or 64 bit windows thing. The build is to try and stay under $1K which I am now.

I play on a 1.15 2600+ computer now with 512 ddr pc3200. 6600 256mb VC. So any up dating will be good.

If you have the 32 bit version of XP and you want to use all 4 gigs of ram you might consider downloading the Beta version of Windows 7 in 64 bit. It's free and from what I hear it is very stable. That will be good until August before it expires, and by then a new beta will be out and you can just upgrade to it until it expires. That should get you through the year before having to buy a version of windows.

I checked and I have the 32 bit system. Well what is the main thing with these new I7 processors?

Hey look, that videocard you have listed on top (EVGA 9800GTX) is in reality 9800GTX+ - trust me, I have got 3 of them lately all purchased separate and all 3 of them were 9800GTX+, they are shorter than old ones, run much cooler, have only one PCI-e 6pin connector instead of 2 and overclock better! On the box it says regular 9800GTX but the vid card inside is different.

Corsair Dominator is much over-rated and over-priced, any 1066 with good rating will do.

And for the motherboard - pick Gigabyte ending in UD3R or UD3P, or this one

Awesome boards, I have used them 5-7 times already, huge overclock potential, cool running, copper layer for cooling, solid capasitors, dual BIOS, you just cant go wrong with it.

What if I don't want to over clock? I see all the threads about the new i7 920 processor. Sounds like this is the way to go. The price may come down by the time I build. Also looking at a 260 for a video card. I would prefer to build the simplest but best. No need for crossfire or sli.

You don't have to overclock, it's just most people with high end PC's like to see what they can get from them. I have not yet upgraded to a core i7 either, and will probably wait for prices to drop. What I have is good for now anyway.

If you want the simplest but the best, the GTX285 is out already, and the GTX295 is due to come out really soon. I can't wait for my GTX295's in TriSLi!!!

If I were you I would be in no hurry to jump on the i7. It is probably more processor than most need, and the motherboards don't seem to be up to par. Looking over various forums and review sites all I find is people pointing out that the x58 mobos are pretty much in the beta testing stage atm. They will get you very good OC's but they are not stable/reliable and do not work as advertised. I made the choice to go with an older build because of what I have seen on almost all forums(see my post "final build" for specs on my new build). I would rather have proven technology than pay to be a beta tester.... as the cliche goes.

I am no expert, just relaying what I have read.

LOL "x58 mobos are pretty much in beta testing stage atm" WHaaaaaaaT?

Those ppl are so wrong. They wouldnt put something for sale to comsumers just as tests. they are very solid. so many people have i7 builds and they are better than any other atm.

Both good points. I will have to se the price when I do start my build. With the i7 the PSU is going to have to jump up in size which is more money also. This computer is getting passed down to my 5 yr old. The next one is going to be for adults only :) I need my CS and with it screwing up with this hl2 error I get pretty pissed.

I don't go with something until I read some reliable reviews from places like Toms Hardware. I'll wait till they get a few more on the i7 before I upgrade my pc.

I don't think PSU should be like much bigger than for Q9550 or Q6600, for example Q9550 is 95W CPU, and i7 920 is 130W, oh well it's just 35W, memory and motherboard would be almost the same.

I have purchased cheapest Gigabyte X58 mobo and it worked perfect for me, it did not even have reviews at that time on newegg. There are a lot of overclocking options, and most of them look different from older LGA775 systems, but after few hours spent online it turned out to be as easy.

Most negative reviews on X58 would be from people who would not be able to set correct settings or can't overclock. But yes, some of the X58 are really bad right now and look like in alpha testing, not even beta, but that's what you have newegg reviews for - check ratings.
