Hey,
I'm thinking about going into a computer related job when I am older. What do I need to know? What training to I need?

Thanks,

Dylan

In the time you have do alot of reading up on pc parts.
save up your money and build and pull apart pcs to learn how things work.

Edit: I think you need to do a computer course (at a later date)

Do you know of any Victoria courses?

You need to know what you want to do really. Just saying a computer related job is too wide an area. The problem is you're only 12 (according to your profile) so you could decide on an area that won't even exist by the time you're old enough and qualified to move into that field.

The most important thing to have these days is commercial experience, employers are rarely interested in people with xyz degree in something fancy, they want at least 1 or 2 years experience in xyz.

If you don't already then start looking at how hardware goes together, how OS's work, how networking works i.e. the basics. Get some web design under your belt, offer to fix other people's machines, keep abreast of new technology so that if anyone asks you know what the next generation of cpu is without having to google it. Linux is big in the world of servers and is gaining popularity on Desktops so again if you aren't into it already then start downloading some free distros and having a play.

Well that depends on what area of IT you are interested. If you want to be a dba, and developer then there are loads of courses to do, if you wanted to move into area of IT management/implementation/project management then you'll be needed a degree in IT + other related minor
IMHO

Make sure you go to a four year college and not just a trade school. Companies won't even think about you if haven't been to a four year college.

I agree with Calibretto most of the major companies want to see a 4 year degree either in CS MIS CIS something like that. That shows them you at least have a techincal background. On the other hand keep reading forums and keep studying your stuff man there are a lot of things out there to learn. The earlier you start and the sooner you learn the lingo and all of the important things the better off you will be. But keep in mind in 6 years when you are ready for college computers will be totally different then they are now. Also if your highschool allows when you get that far take techincal courses in computers. Try all the aspects of the field. Its very broad and you need to understand what you want to do by doing it.!
