Hi All
Appreciate the thoughts in case someone who knows more than me can tear this idea apart.
Currently at work we are operating on a remote desktop system of terminals on a server running Windows 2003 server edition.
We are due to upgrade a few years past but haven't been in a position to do so until now.
The boss has gone to see IT companies and got quotes I find amusing and a little bit expensive.
In thinking about our computers at the office and looking forward I cant see any reason we couldn't purchase some 2 in 1 laptops brand new running Windows 8, connect these to monitors and usb hubs so other things like mouse and keyboards connect easily and then use these with NAS as file storage.
The advantages I see are:
- Not everyone effected if the computer slows down. Just the local user
- With a wireless network in the building and the machines registered on each wireless hub we can take the tablet portion from one location to another and work collarabitively which we cant now
- Lower cost investment meaning we can phase equipment out and upgrade sooner and easier in a piece meal fashion if finances need it
I cant see any up side to using Windows Server 2012 operating system? In fact the only upside I see is the IT firms can charge us more money for support. Using the above approach we can self support for the most part with occasional IT support.
So come on tear the thinking apart as if we can then the IT people will and I need to understand why they are so I can prepare my boss with the answers and questions to neutralise them?
