Thinking of Upgrading to SATA...

As the title sys, I'm thinking of upgrading my HDD to SATA. My MOBO supports 1.5 gig/s SATA but I currently have an IDE drive.

I am wondering how difficult it is to clone my new drive, and if it is worth it to do the upgrade.

Als, can I use RAID with an SATA and IDE drive?
 
You wont see much difference upgrading to a SATA drive in terms of speed, unless your upgrading because you need more space, I wouldn't do it.

You can copy the files from the IDE to the SATA, but you cant clone it, since the OS wouldn't load correctly.

And no, you can't RAID an IDE and SATA.

yea, sata is worth it in my opinion. it really depends on the drive though because some sata drives are actually slower than ide drives. if i were you i'd just add a drive for storage and then next time you reformat (assuming you do so at least once a year) just switch from using the 160gb to the 250gb drive. the 250gb drive will be faster, so if you want reformat right when you get it thats good too.
if you've got the money, i highly suggest you use a 74gb... especially if you play games that are very memory intensive such as oblivion and quake 4... not that all games arent, but quake 4 probably uses at least 1.5gb of memory, plus if you want your computer to do other things in the background you'll need even more hard drive speed... i mean really, whos computer lags because of their hard drive? lol
 
You can clone it. I've done it. You can also do RAID with PATA to SATA. Several motherboards offer this option. That said I wouldn't do it. You won't see any differences and it will be a nightmare when the concoction dies (and they do).
