Thinking of Upgrading

I have always been a loyal fan of AMD and would like to know if I upgrade to socket AM2 would it be compatiable with the future Amd Cpu's ( like quad cores etc. ) or should I wait until next year too see what comes out? I see alot of people switching to Conroe and I'm having a hard time deciding which way to go. I value the opinions of this Forum for they have never steered me in the wrong direction, so please feel free to advise me of what your thoughts are on my upgrading.

asus AN8 SLI Premium mobo
Amd 64x2 4400+ dual core cpu
enermax 600watt psu
2 6800 GS Evga 256mb boards
2 gb of Cosair dual channel pc3200 (4 x 512 )
Pri. HD WD 10,000 rpm 74gb sata raptor
Sec > HD WD 7200 rpm 250gb sata
HP DL DVD lightscribe burner
NEC DL DVD burner
Case Aspire Navigator
 
Going AM2 will be future-proof, I was going to get the Athlon 64 5000+ but the Conroe E6600 4MB Cache hands down beats it!
 
So staying with Amd and going AM2 , do you think I'll be able to use the quad cores when they come out or will I have to upgrade everything again. I want to try to buy a MOBO that will last for a couple of years so at least I can get my money out of it, before having to upgrade again. Thanks for the advice.

They will probably update the boards and everything because its quad cores. Plus that way people are going to have to upgrade which means more money.
 
Socket AM2 will most likely not be compatble with the X4. If you want an awesome system now, get a Core 2 Duo. If you want an okay interim system, get AM2.
 
There is NO guarantee that the quad core CPUs will be on the AM2 socket, no matter what AMD says at this point. As a matter of fact, I will bet a significant amount of money that they aren't. It is not the habit of AMD or Intel to keep the same socket, not only for design reasons, but it forces people to upgrade all their hardware and keeps the industry moving and people spending money.

NO computer equipment is future proof. That is just a myth. Just buy what you want and use it for as long as you can. Personally I would ditch AMD. They are getting their asses handed to them. C2D offers a very clear performance advantage, and seeing as how neither one is future proof, I would definitely go to the performance leader.
 
We all know that Intel's conroe has been kicking Amd x2's ass.
It is a fact.And yes they are the performance leader as of right now.
No arugments there.
But look at prices to. People want the best computer they can get for the money. And if going AMD means more options, higher grade parts,(for example, more ram,) then i personally think AMD would be well worth it.

The way everyone expresse's the C2D is that, if you do not have one, you cannot play the latest games, and run programs you want at lighting fast speeds etc.. That is the jest of what i have gotten from everyone.
But can you honestly tell me, someone with a AMD based system, that put a good 1300 to 1500 dollars into that computer will not beable to play the latest games and have FUN?

I saved up and bought my system out of my own money, and the course i went was AMD and im dam proud of my system.I can run just about any game on GREAT settings and get great FPS and no lagg. I enjoy playing my games and doing other tasks, but its on AMD;s system, does that make it any less?

Anyways, enough rambling, the point im trying to say is AMD systems still provide awsome performance in any application you would want to run/use this day in age.
So why beat them down about it? becasue the C2D has a advantage over it?
Next year something else will be the advantage over the C2D

just my thoughts.
