I need a new hard drive for my thinkpad r31. right now im running a 20gb 4200rpm(i think). I was looking for a 80gb, 7200rpm but read somewhere that laptop cooling sux and not to run anything over 5400rpm. now im looking at a 60gb, 5400rpm, 8mb buffer for $100. will this provide noticable improvements in speed, or do the rpms really not do much? I move alot of data, mostly downloading, copying, movin stuff around (no video editing or anything). is this a good HD for my purposes? tips for buying HDs? thanx alot

The 7200's are more expensive than the 5400's and for that particular laptop I wouldn't think you would necessarily need the increased speed for the difference in price. As far as heat, I can't really say, but I wouldn't imagine the 7200's being too much hotter than the 5400's but again I don't really know.

well, if you are used to the 4200rpm HD, then you will probably see some difference with the 5400, but probably not a lot i would say. if you are worried about overheating, you could always get a cooling pad to go under it, unless you use it just as a portable. my laptop stays on my desk most of the time, so i got a cooling pad and it works wonders. a lot of the time, my cpu fan doesnt even run, and i can barely hear the fans on the pad. i would reccomend one to everyone who uses a laptop.
