ThinkPad T23 problem....

My daughter purchased a reconditioned T23 with Wi Fi capability. I have no experience with laptops or wireless. Yesterday she was in a coffee house that was Wi Fi capable, so she was hoping to try it out for the first time. Turned on the laptop and nothing happened. There is no ISP loaded into the laptop. Does she need one? Where is the wireless card to see if there is one. Its supposed operat on 802.11b. Any suggestions?

What OS is it running? IBM's support site said that it can be running Microsoft Windows 98 Second Edition, Microsoft Windows XP Professional, or Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional.

If you have Windows XP, there is a built in wireless utility that comes with it. SP2 on Windows XP has a nicer, cleaner wireless utility for users.

If you have 98 or 2000, then you may have to do some research and see what the manufacturer of the wireless module in the laptop has for a utility. You can download and install that, and it should work.

You do not need your own ISP to get on at an internet cafe. They are providing the Internet access for you, so you are basically using their ISP.

Let me know what OS you are running.

The OS is W2000 Prof. This laptop was purchased as a reconditioned one. I spoke to IBM support(very helpful) and they say that when they recondition them, they are wiped clean. All that was reinstalled was th OS. I added Win Office 2000 to it. They gave me 4 wireless drivers to download. When these are installed, they want her to go to a Wi Fi "hot spot" and give IBM a call and they will guide her thru a set up. As for the keyboard error, it seems to have gone away for the time being. When it occurs, you can't do anything since the keyboard is inoperative. We'll see how it goes. Thanks.

That sounds like the best plan then, now that you have the drivers installed for the wireless module.

You can also take it to anyones house you know that has a wireless access point and see if your utility is picking up any wireless networks that way. You can also try to connect to their access point - make sure you know if it is encrypted or not, you may have to enter a key to be able to gain access to their network.

Most Wi-Fi hotspots are open access, which means they do not require a network key to log on to their network. She should be able to get on there easily enough.

Enjoy the coffee while you surf ;)
