thoughts on a Sound Card?

As of right now i am using the onboard MOBO audio connections and I believe there is something wrong with them. it has the ports to have 8.1 Surround sound but I have only been able to get it to work on 2 channels. for this reason I am thinking about getting a PCI Sound Board. Any thoughts on what is worth buying? i have never felt the need for a sound card until now...
Thanks in advance

Imo you cant beat a good dedicated sound card.

Look at getting a Asus Xonar,Or anything made by Creative (Soundblasters).

which model depends on your budget :)

Besides the Asus Xonar seriously look at the HT Omega offerings. They have a great reputation and have drivers for 32 and 64 bit XP, Vista, and 7.

If it's soundmax integrated stuff, there is a setting in the audio control panel for it relating to enabling more than 2.1 audio on integrated audio.

Thanks for the info all... my budget is no more than $250 for it and I checked all the settings under the Windows 7 Control Panel all to no avail.

i just got myself a auzentech forte on Win 7 64bit. All i can say is its AWESOME very good investment comes with a headphone amp too :). Only downside i can say about this card is the drivers are slow to update (because they use creative drivers but mod it after) and feel alittle laggy..

Avoid all creative sound cards too, simply because there are alot of unhappy customers with there software support.

I'm happy with my creative card although it's not a full-hardware X-Fi, it uses software... i might pick up a better one soon.
