My 3GS is on its last leg, I want to give android a go, and AT&T is offering it for [strike]one cent[/strike] $29.99 w/ a two year agreement. Hardware specs are similar to the iPhone 4. I know they've got the S II available, but for $200 less out the door, the Captivate has pretty much everything I need in a phone. I'm gonna go check it out tomorrow.

All the reviews I've read have been favorable fwiw.

Apparently the one cent deal for the Captivate is online only and $29.99 in store, but they'll give me a free case if I buy in store. Because of the method I'm using to upgrade, online ordering isn't possible.

Other phones in the poll:

HTC Inspire

Samsung Infuse

Samsung Galaxy S II

I have a Samsung Epic which is apart of the Galaxy S Family and I love it. You can do just about anything with it and I love how it syncs with all google and most Linux products.

Friend of mine has that phone and he loves it, apparently it gets great battery life with the stock rom. I suggest you upgrade to a better rom (cyanogenmod) though.

No 4g(HSPA+) would be my only thing to note...

yup looks hella sick and love the price. Was originally planning to get something by HTC until I saw this deal.

Thanks Kobaj. Right, no 4g, but I don't even think that's supported yet in my area.

How's chrome on the android platform? Don't really use it on my PC. I CAN WATCH FLASH VIDEOS NOW OMGOMG

I just use the Android browser, so I don't know. And I don't surf the web much anyway.

Ahh, I see. I assumed it shipped with chrome as the default. Can't wait to pick it up and start playing with it. I'm guessing that most of the apps I used with the iphone are available with android. How's the facebook app? The iOS version is a POS.

The two facebook versions are identical as far as I can tell. And as far as apps, I'm not quite sure. I believe so. I know I have a remote touchpad called gPad which is only on Android. Aside from that I'm not sure.

The default Android browser is Chrome, just in mobile form. It works great, and unlike in iOS you can download files off the internet should you need to.

The Galaxy S is a good smart phone, should do anything the average user wants. I'm not entirely happy with the display quality on it's first gen SAMOLED, just looks pixelated to me. I must prefer the display on my Xplay, to my eyes it's like the difference between having anti-aliasing set to max, whereas the SAMOLED looks like anti-aliasing off. Contrast however is amazing on the SAMOLED.

Most iOS apps have an Android equivalent.

The store opens in 10 minutes and now, only because I'm American and HAVE to have the latest shit, I'm going to get the galaxy 2 or something similar in that price range ($200). Any additional recommendations before I pull the trigger? Keep in mind it must be an AT&T subsidized model.

OK - the galaxy 2 with 4G LTE doesn't arrive until next month (4G is available out here apparently) so I can wait, or I can go with their HTC which looks sick or they have the samsung inspire at the $99 price point... hmm gonna add a poll.

I'd really prefer NOT to wait another month to replace my phone. For the S II, I'd be waiting only for the 4G LTE feature, so do you guys think that's worth the wait?

I LOVE my Captivate, so much you can do with it and there is a huge community of developers making custom roms for it. The GS and the GSII are honestly the only good phones on ATT. Read reviews on the others, its what made decision in favor of the Captivate.

How often would you use it to view complex web pages, stream content

often enough i'm guessing. i do a ton of web browsing from my phone.

download large files?

hardly ever. for one, i wouldn't want to use and pay for the data. two, what kind of large files, aside form media stuff, would i download? music and all that i normally do at home, but i'll download using their network occasionally.

yup, I've read some reviews and so far I can't see myself choosing anything outside the Galaxy family. added the poll because I like polls. :P

Just saw you turned this into a pole!

I have the inspire 4g, great phone, but I don't think I can recommend it. The battery life is only a day and a half and every once and a while the touchscreen stops working (this happens regardless of rom and has happened to other people).

Friend of mine has the Infuse, bigger screen than the inspire, but even less battery life. He gets about a day. I don't know about any of its other flaws, but can ask if you like?

If 4g is not in your area or you don't care about it, get the captivate.

If you have to have speed, wait and see about the Galaxy S2.

EDIT: Keep in mind, the Galaxy S2 will probably not be hacked/rommable for a few months after its release.

Then you'd most likely make use of the LTE speeds, in which case, patience is a virtue. :P

For one I don't blame you, although I figured with those speeds they'd give you quite a bit of data. Two, I've downloaded updated roms in the past using the phone, eliminating the need for a computer to switch up the rom. I sometimes download music when someone recommends me a song or if a hear a good one on the radio. Some of the mid sized games on the market get up to 50 megs with updates that can sometimes take 25 megs. Or if for whatever reason you'd want to download a 700 some odd meg gameloft game while away from a hotspot.

Today the salesman told me 4G is available, so that's cool to know.

Yeah, the LTE feature, and I think dude told me that the display in next months model is a little better. Don't remember the specifics. That seems to be the decision. Oh and money too I suppose lol.

Really, for me, the Captivate is the best price/performance deal. Let's say we use the LTE speed on a regular basis. Watch a bunch of video w/ no buffering, download apps and media junk, dropbox pics whatever... you get raped on the data end. Without unlimited data, or at least a tier level in the 5GB+ range, 4G LTE loses a lot of its appeal because, imo, it costs too much to use in the ways you're suppose to use it, or where you benefit from the speed.

That's how they get you with this data shit.

Yes, if used, I'd love it and def benefit. But like I said here and in your texting thread, it's easy to use 2GB, which costs me $25/month and once you go above that, they start outright scamming you. I don't remember the additional data pricing scheme they force you into and too lazy to look it up, but it's brutal and not worth it (prolly another $25 for 2GB, or 1GB for $20). Not for what you get in return, which, for me, would be a bunch of liberal news content, whatevers funny on youtube atm and other mindless internet LOL related stuff.

When they marketed their data pricing plans, they claimed that a high majority of users would never go above their baseline offering of 200MB. Making the company the victim and the consumer the bad guy, they sold the idea that if you used more than 2GB, their only other option, you were a data hoarding, greedy asshole and you should have to pay an exorbitant overage fee for any usage above that.

I mean, today, with netflix and all the video available online, the ability to capture HD video, 8MP pics then share them from your phone AND with the size of websites and the data used just to render a page, am I wrong in thinking that 2GB is low? Most of the time I'm in a wireless network, so, yes, I could wait until then to do some of this, but then again it defeats the purpose of having this 4G feature.

That said, I'm still not going to rule it out. I'll have it for two years and I can watch my data usage. One thing about ATT is that they send several notifications via text and email before you go over.

Even with the 4g plans they still only give you 2gb?

I never even reach 500mb a month on my phone. Then again, I don't have that many internet things that I want to look up regularly.
