My new laptop has a ThunderBolt port, what exact does this do for me?

I read up on it and still dont get what I use it for?

Where do you buy a wire for it/device for it?

Nobody seems to have one on their computer and I've never seen it before.

I know apple has a monitor and backup drive for it, runs about $1000 each. im not really seeing much else right now.
