Tied between two laptops

Hello, I'm a 26 year old student and I decided to purchase a laptop. I purchased a Toshiba A665-S6086 laptop and so far I love it for the two days I have owned it. I was also looking at a HP dv7-4165dx laptop as well. I mainly use a computer for internet searching and school work which consists of using word, excel and powerpoint. My question is, has anyone had good and or bad luck with a Toshiba? I have only owned HP and I thought I would give Toshiba a shot. Also, they offered me an extended warranty and declined it. Stupid of me to do? Thanks everyone!
 
Having Owned Toshiba and HP, I would not rate either over the other. Every company has its bad eggs.
I have had good luck with the HP ZE5200 (old business class laptop) and used it for near to 8 years before it failed. I also had a Compaq (don't remember the model) desktop, and a DV7 that both failed due to bad Mobo's.
The Toshiba I have herd good things about. Personally, I had had a L305D and a L455D that both failed. Never really delved deeper to try to figure out what they died from. Also had a L305-S5908 (Core 2 Duo 2.0GHZ, 4GB RAM, 320 GB HDD, Intel graphics card). It went down due to HDD failure one time, But a Western Digital (from the DV7) fixed the problem in less than 2 hours.

Statistically, the Toshiba is the better buy. Toshiba tends to have the higher quality parts, and service quality.
 
The salesman was trying to push the HP with the extended warranty. The people that I talked to that own Toshiba really like them. I'm an HP guy but willing to try something different. He also said I was crazy for not taking the extended warranty.
 
I just bought a laptop at Best Buy and also did not get the extended warranty. If the computer was more costly I would have also if it was a cheaper warranty price. I just bought a tv that I did get the warranty because the price was reasonable. With my dell I did and it did not cover certain things. It is hard to know and like the other poster said sometimes you just get an item that has problems.
 
the factory warranty actually doesn't cover most things that occur unless they are factory faults. The extended warranty isn't even as good as the factory. You are better off just buying a good quality laptop to start with, and keep it cool. Heat is the enemy with the laptops, well computers in general. If you keep it cool it will have a longer life.
Also get the most RAM that it will support, and faster RAM is good also. around 1333 MHZ is a good standard. This will also extend the system life.

Thanks. There should not be so much fine print. Some people don't think to ask until they learn through the experience.
 
The fine print is what gets you. And I have learned from experience. I am glad that my experience could help you.
 
I'm personally a fan of ASUS, Lenovo, and Dell... (dell... lol.)
I had an article about laptop brands (PC life, etc.) but I can't find it.

HP was the worst...
 
BurningSkyline could you tell us please why Asus and Lenovo get your vote? What models do you think are the better by these brands. I've been looking at these two brands closely and could use some input. Thanks.
 
I love both my toshiba's. Their software is the best by far. Most stores(Best Buy, Fryes) will recommend toshiba as does consumer reports.
 
Toshiba is the best. Their software is seamless. I have two and have owned several before and was able to give them to family when I bought new ones. The people at Best Buy said toshiba is best as do consumer reports.
