Time for a new laptop

I can only deal with my HP for so much longer before I slam my head into a wall, so I'm going to buy something new. I don't want to spend more than $500 TOTAL. I would like to get a dell, but I am open to any suggestions? Where and what should I look for. I want atleast 3GB but would prefer 4.

For under $500, Dell from bestbuy would have T4400 with 3GB RAM and 250GB HDD, which make toshiba are better buy.
