Time For An Upgrade

So I've had my dual overclocked 8800GTs for some time now, and I think it's time I upgrade. I don't really want to go over to ATI, since I don't want to upgrade other things. I was wondering what a decently priced card would be, but that's more powerful than two 8800s. I'd also assume my PSU would be fine as well, right? I could always throw in a second one I guess.. I don't know a price, since I don't know what is out there.

And if you think two GTs are still pretty useful, and I don't have them clocked very high, let me know. I plan on playing the most recent games, if that helps.

If I buy a card that performs better than my two GTs, I'll get it and end up SLIing later.

Thanks.

No brainer, GTX460 1gb

Consumes less power than two 8800gt's anyway, so your PSU is plenty fine.

Do you mind overclocking your card? Or do you just leave it at stock clocks? If you overclock, just get a standard clocked 460. If you don't like to touch setting, get a factory overclocked one.

I would normally say get an EVGA, but they are all out of stock at the moment. The Zotac there has a lifetime warranty too so it's good.

I was looking at the 260, then I saw like the 460 768MB for $200, and for an extra $30, I can get the 1GB version. So the 460 1GB would be a nice upgrade? I assume I'll see quite a gain in performance?

Thanks!

With the 1gb, yeah nice upgrade especially if you get a superclocked version.

Nevakoneza- Don't recommend the gtx465! It's crap! A 460 1gb is stronger, uses less power, is a smaller card, and is cheaper! The 465 is the biggest flop ever honestly, I feel sorry for anyone who bought one.

Is the only difference in the Superclocked edition the speeds?

Wow ive only just read about the 460 vs the 465 and it appears you are correct,im shocked actualy because i assumed the 465 would be slightly better.

Whats up with Nvidia on that one then? :P

Yeah the gtx475 and 495 will be out before the gts450 comes out though. Looking at it's specs my guess is the gts450 will be on par with a gtx260 or so...but with all the goodies like DX11, DDR5 ram, and the cooler less energy consuming 40nm process. It will probably also only have a single 6 pin connector, so not bad for a card with gtx260 power. If it's only $150 or less, it could be a huge seller.

Yeah that's Nvidia's answer to the 5770 with a cheaper price tag. Cool looking design, apparently there supposed to be released sometime in August.

I would even consider buying one just to test it out, or even keep because I get bored with hardware so easily. Plus I like only one 6 pin connector per card.

Same here, I go through video cards like crazy, in the past year I think I've owned about ten different cards.

2x X1950 pro's
3870
4670
2x 4870 1gb
2x 4870 X2
5770
5830

7200gs
2x 8600gt
2x 8600gts
2x 8800gts 320mb
5x 8800gt
3x 8800gts 512mb
8800gtx
8800 ultra
2x 9600gt
9600gso
5x 9800GX2
gts250
gtx260 c216
gtx275 co-op
gtx280
gtx285
gtx460 1gb

OK I was way off, 41 cards. Just off the top of my head. Hard to remember.

haha, just counted actually I've had 24 different cards, just multiples of some of them. I was right after all LMAO.

Holy Moly. That's a new card every week! Is that only in your main rig? And to the OP, go with the GTX 460 1 gb, you won't be disappointed.

Yeah all for me, mostly just to test and resell. Not all in the same rig I have now, not even close. I've owned a plethora of motherboards and CPU's from various sockets as well (both AMD and intel).

At one point, I'd say the strongest setup I had was the I7 860 overclocked to 4.9ghz on DICE, with a gigabyte P55-UD4P, with two overclocked 9800gx2's in quad SLI, three 32mb OCZ vertex SSD's in raid 0, and 2x2gb of the same ram I have now the G.Skill trident ddr3-2000 cas 9 which will run up to 2200mhz on cas 9 I've found. My enermax 720w power supply STILL handled all that, although I think it was pretty much maxxed out I was starting to get worried with that much overclock.

Cool. I'm still having issues with my 9800 gx2, want to sell it but not in the state it's in. I'm going to take it in to get it tested, I have a feeling I bought a dud.

Alright, so I plan on buying the 460 1GB this weekend. Is the Zotac brand the best to go with?

Warranty wise, go with EVGA and look for the -AR designation, which as long as registered within 30 days nets you a lifetime warranty, as well as covers overclocking/voltage tuning(via software), changing thermal interface material, or even changing the cooler(as long as the card is reverted to the stock cooler when sent in). The external exhaust heatskink is nice as well.

Card wise, gigabyte and asus have some good coolers on their cards, relatively low noise as well.
