Time for processor upgrade

Hi fellow CF,ers :D

well im feeling that my computer is a little slower than i want it to be,i already have my little e6300 overclocked to 2.8Ghz but i want faster.
if i overclock anymore i get errors in orthos because of my memory is 667mhz currently nearly running at 800mhz.

so i think its time i upgraded my processor to a Q6600,and Overclock it to at least 3.5Ghz

do you think thats possible on my rig?

afterall i did go from 1.8 to 2.8 with my e6300 before i got errors

any feedback appreciated.

EDIT:Im also concearned about my psu,im currently running my rig on a 450W Gigabyte Psu,ive never had any issues with my system so its a good psu but will upgrading to a quad require more power?

yes it does take quads and is also 45nm ready,i was looking at my bios version and i can go up to a q6700 without needing to update my motherboards Bios so thats good news because i dont like updating Bios lol :)

Well that is what i say, i say go for it.

Someone else might have something different to say, who know's.....

you only overclocked to 2.8ghz with that board? lol what is its rated FSB? that seems a little low, i got around there with a 1066mhz rated board, only supports 65nm procs...

anyways, my suggestions are A. get the Q6600 B. if you want a more expensive one, dont go for anything under the Q9450 (i think its discontinued) or the Q9550.

they'll easily overclock to higher speeds than the Q6600, but in any case make sure you have something better than stock cooling if you're overclocking. using more power = generating more heat.

its not my boards thats holding me back its my ram...667Mhz ram
my rated FSB with my processor at 2.7 atm is 1560.3Mhz,i wish my e6300 was allendale and not conroe

i dont realy want to spend any more than £120 on a new processor,im not going for a e8400 because again its dual core.

You and me both, Shane. I'm getting a Q6600 too! :D

yeah remember in the pm i sent ages ago saying i was looking for either the q6600 or q6700,i would be very happy if i could get it to 3.3-3.5Ghz
E8400 FTW! :D Everything looks like there'd be no problem so go ahead :)

Only concern is your PSU, it is kinda low but I guess is just me...

You two should buy 1 and share the cores :P

Im sure my psu could handle it,i havnt had any issues yet anyway so.

RAM is super cheap nowadays... perhaps a $30 (17 pound?) RAM upgrade would do it. But yeah, a new proc would definitely help.

get some ballistix very nice ram mine is 1066mhz ddr2 and i have had my q6600 uop to 3.6ghz but i have dropped it back to stock as i dont need the extra ghz and i have not noticed a difference
