Timeouts?

My gaming and downloading frequently suffers from timeouts. I used an AT&T modem/router to connect to the internet. I assumed that was the issue. I once had a bad modem at the house and when we fixed that our internet was fantastic. I could play Starcraft and download from Bittorrent at the same time! But over here its terrible. Sometimes it slows down to the point I can't even do basic internet browsing. So I bought a DSL modem and a router and hooked everything up. But for some reason I still get these timeouts! What else could it be? I was thinking of looking into a new wireless receiver for my desktop now...

As a good test (and what I do in this case)
Plug the computer directly into the modem "hard wired" via Ethernet cable
This will be a good test just to see if its your wireless USB dongle or not (I note that you may need to physically move the computer)

Sometimes the fault can be due to Malware/Virus activity, which Antivirus do you use? And have you tried running free Malwarebytes?
Also you could try "Safe Mode with Networking" to eliminate many startups that could be causing the slowdowns

I have a big desktop tower in my room and the modem + router is in the living room. But I will try with a girlfriends laptop. I use Norton Antivirus and Ad-aware. Ad-aware was getting hung up recently so I did assume I was having spyware issues. But I ran it in safe mode and it worked and I didn't see anything besides the usual crap.

I remembered recently that when I was first putting my desktop together... I ordered a wireless receiver. Thinking back now.. it was a pretty cheap brand, as I was trying to cut costs. And I think I remember discovering that the device does not work with Vista. I have Vista, but since I was able to connect, I never thought it was an issue. I'm starting to have second thoughts about that.

But thanks... I will try a direct connect and see if that makes a difference. All other ideas would be appreciated. Thank you!

You could try temporarily uninstalling Norton
Note: I only say temporary for your benefit, as you may have paid for the product recently; if it is near to the end of subscription you may want to update to a better Antivirus. In My Opinion: Free Avira Antivirus is much better than paid Norton.

Here are the details on removing and re-installing Norton Antivirus: http://service1.symantec.com/Support/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2005033108162039
Edit: Note you must use the Removal Tool to remove Norton fully

Either test your system whilst Norton is temporarily uninstalled
Or install free Avira and run a full scan (Avira may (likely) remove found malwares through doing the scan)
