Tips to help keep Computer adaware, spyware, virus free

Can you post some tips on how to keep your computer clean and free from all the adaware, sypware, viruses, etc.

I had to replace my hard drive yesterday after getting several pop ups causing my computer to crash, I had to reformat it, when i tried formating it, Windows said this disk was damaged and can not be formated. I powered down the pc and powered it back on, and the hard drive would not spin up. Id like to prevent this from happening ever again.
 
instead of formatting once a week try once every 2 days?

perhaps a better alternative would be getting a decent firewall/av [kaspersky suite, nod suite, kerio personal firewall, other firewalls] and being smart about which apps are safe to open. using firefox with some anti hacking tools also helps
