Tired of PC Games Being Left Out

I'm not a big gamer, but i usually play a few of the big titles each year. I'm becoming annoyed with these games that are PS3 only release, or Xbox 360 only. I owned a 360 a few years ago, and sold it after less than a year. The build quality is terrible on those things, there seems to be a very high failure rate and microsft isn't going to do much about it. The PS3 may not have the same problems, but i don't like most of the games on there anyway. I shouldn't have to buy someones $&%^ty budget machine, when i have the know how to build my own. Yes I know, it's a free market and these companies have the right to exclude content from whichever platforms they choose, but i also think 75% of the time it has nothing to do with the extra investment it takes to make it compatible with all systems, and more to do with their fear of piracy. If they didn't charge so much for these games, you might have people who are less inclined to steal them. Video games is dominated by the kids and young adult market... mostly people who don't have $60 to just throw around.

My question is, what can we do as gamers to let these companies know we will not be forced into buying a sub-par quaity system, just to play a particular game? I'd love to think someone is reading these complaints, but in most cases i think it's just tossed aside. On that note the DRM a lot of companies use now is so intrusive, it makes people not want to buy games. I'm not for just blatanty stealing software, but i'm smart enough to know you're not going to stop it. There is not a game out there that has not been successfully cracked, so all this DRM seems to do nothing but annoy it's paying customers. For ex: I won't buy Cyrsis for the simple fact that they are going to tell me how many times i can install it... it's just not worth it.

They are ripping people off, and the pc gaming community is suffering for it.
Which games are you specifically talking about? And which companies produced them?
I'm also sick of companies releasing games too early across many platforms (eg: far cry 2)
that are still full of bugs, and bad ones at that.
The question is: who developed and released the games? Once we know that it's pretty easy to contact them.

Fable 2.

I wanna play that so badly that Im considering buying an xbox. I just dont have the money to throw around for a system, controllers, xbox live, etc, etc, etc, when I have so much invested into my computer.

Most devs are moving away from the PC because of piracy... I remember reading that World of Goo had an 80% piracy rate.... EIGHTY PERCENT.

I fully understand the reasons people pirate games. I have wasted countless dollars on games/software that was either pathetic quality, or just flat out wouldn't work, so for that reason alone torrents are pretty tempting. Not to mention the most obvious reason, why pay when you can get it for free? On the flipside, I fully understand why some developers feel like they have been stabbed in the back by the community. They put their sweat blood and tears into making a great product for the world to enjoy, and the vast majority of people show their appreciation by downloading it illegally.

It is a fact that after the cost of development, production, marketing, etc, most games these days do not break even. Knowing that, it's hard to understand why PC gaming hasn't died off completely already.

DRM and all the other failed ideas that have been implemented over the years exist solely because of piracy. If it is to have any chance of changing, those who enjoy PC gaming are going to have to stop being greedy and start PAYING for games again. A crazy concept, I know.

I am no angel, I am just as guilty as anyone else... But I am trying to change my evil ways :P

Wouldnt it be say like soon COD6 will be coming in November wouldnt it be Activision who RELEASE the game? Or is there someone else who does that?

Yes, there is the developer who actually makes the game, and a publisher who is in charge of production, marketing, etc. For example Call of Duty 4 was developed by Infinity Ward, and published by Activision.

Speaking of pirating, i've been thinking about this for a while. I may be missing something but here it goes...

I think a lot of people pirate all their games because of price. For example Transformers 2 was said to have cost $110 million to make. Crysis (one of the more expensive games made recently) claims it cost them $22 million to make... a number I might argue is exaderated. Looking at these examples... when Transformers 2 comes out on DVD what do you think it's going to cost, $20 maybe $25? What was the price of Crysis when it came out... $50-$60? I'd love to know where they are justifying this 100% premium because it's a game. I'd bet my pay check Megan Fox made a sh*t load more money than any voice actor did for Crysis... like not even in the same ballpark. What about Michael Bay, how much do you think they paid him plus his royalties vs whoever the Lead Designer was for Crysis. The point is these games don't cost even half what a big budget Hollywood movie costs... and some how they are twice the price or more as a movie? It's a joke and I think people are tired of it.

Very valid point. Games should be priced at $29.99 for new releases, and then dropped to $20 a few months after release. If that were the case, I would have no problem justifying a new game purchase. Console gamers have it especially rough, at $60 for some new titles.

That is the case...I read a huge article...like 4 pages in PC Gamer about a year ago. PC games are pirated so badly most companies barley break even with them. Some of the big titles even loose money. They said that Activision estimates for every one copy of Call of Duty Modern Warfare released...6 were pirated.

It costs a lot of money to develop games. That's an army of people working for months just to get a game published and then to have it copied a million times...that sucks.

You can't even blame them really...start loosing money...get out of the market;) Wait another 5 years when only about half the games made are even released for PC.:P

Crytek was using pirated copies of Maya to create their first game (Farcry) to begin with. They got caught and had to pay, plus some.

Not everyone pirates games. I buy all my games. I will pirate applications and try them out first before I buy them since almost all trial versions are ridiculous and you don't get a full feel for the app unless you spend a while working with it.

However, if I want to use it, I will buy it straight up legit.

As for games being exclusive, it is called a free market and they can pay whomever they want whatever they want to keep the game exclusive. It is was gives them a competitive edge.

Now with the release of all the old Lucas Arts games on Steam, I see a lot of companies releasing old and ported games on steam because the Lucas Arts ones are selling like hot cakes.

I admit, I bought the whole star wars pack out of nostalgia for the games I played when I was younger.

You're forgetting that Transformers 2 hit the big screen first making $35+ mil opening weekend. The movies coming out on DVD for $20 a pop is a secondary market for film companies, it's just icing on the cake (or a way to try to recoup losses from big screen flops). I understand the angst in going out to buy the latest game for PS3 (I paid $60 for Dead Space on release) but look at all the hoopla when these games come out. Wii's on ebay for $500+? Not to mention Comic Con and all the slick advertisers and new tech that we "have" to have. We're out there paying the money that developers want us to pay for their product, so they are going to make us PAY.

i have to disagree. i think when these games provide good online game play... most people will buy the game so they can do the whole multiplayer thing. i'm not saying game companies aren't losing money from all the pirating... but i'd make the argument that much of it is their own fault, being the pricing obviously.

I do this a lot with music. iTunes store 20 second previews aren't nearly enough for me to decide whether or not i like a band, i need to hear the whole song... and most of what i listen to is not played on the radio, except XPN Y-Rock. So I download the album and I like it, i'll buy it as soon as i have the money, especially if it's a smaller artist who i think deserves every penny of their sales.

Reason why they sell like hot cakes is his old games were FANTASTIC. I still play KOTOR and Battlefront.

90% of games today are total garbage and survive on "hype" might I point out Far Cry 2 as a PERFECT example.

All angst and discomfort originates from the same place -- because
in this moment, you are using some experience as your excuse to feel
DISEMPOWERED.
