i've got my laptop right here, next to the monitor of my main pc... since viruses ruin eveything i don't want the pc online anymore

so, when i download stuff on the laptop i throw it on the usb stick and move it over to the pc. it's a pain in the ass, so i bought this 'hi-speed usb bridge-network cable'

can't get it to work right, AND IT'S DRIVING ME NUTS

god forbid this stuff just doesnt WORK. i'm usually good with computers, but with this i need an MIT degree it seems :rolleyes::rolleyes:

all i want to do is transfer data... i'm not interested in sharing internet, or a elaborate 'network'

nevermind, i guess i'm just complaining............. i'm so fed up with windows and all this stupid bullshit

You ever looked into dual-booting (using two operating systems on the same computer)? I use the Linux Ubuntu operating system to do most of my Internet browsing since it is so resistant to malicious software. And I also have my Windows Vista to do what Linux can't do, but I avoid using the Internet with it as I think Windows is a wide open target for viruses and malicious software.

What? That's kind of misleading. Ubuntu is no more secure a OS than Windows. I'm not defending Windows, but that's just incorrect.

The way Linux operating systems are programmed makes them more secure against malicious software than Windows. More servers now are running a with Linux Operating System than Windows presently. I don't know where you are getting your information but I would do some more research on the subject.

No it isn't. Linux has less "exploited holes" because it is an operating system less "attacked".

If several hundred people try to break into Safe A, there will be more chances to break into it than Safe B which only gets about a dozen or so break-in attempts.

It's that simple a concept.

Open this subject in the Operating Systems section of this forum and many will give you the same information I have stated. Why do you think more servers are running Linux over Windows?

It's fast, portable and fairly low-cost compared to Windows. Nothing that dictates that it's any less vulnerable than Windows.

The problem that you're forgetting is that even if it is on more servers, that's generally on the business side of things. Consumers usage of Windows still eclipse Linux as the operating system of choice, and that is the real reason Windows appear more vulnerable. A person trying to show the world they can make sophisticated software (albeit malicious in nature) will do it where there is more reach.

I've used Windows for years and had to battle against malicious software and viruses many times. After using Linux operating systems (Ubuntu, OpenSuse, Fedora) for over six months with the Internet you know how much malicious software I have had to battle? Zero.

Someone I know had continual problems with viruses and malicious software attacking their Windows XP operating system. Their registry eventually got corrupted and destroyed by malicious software. After I installed Linux Ubuntu on their computer they have had zero problems as well.

I am not saying Linux operating systems have no security vulnerabilities. Every operating system has their positives and negative attributes as no one has programmed the perfect system yet and probably never will. But I can state that Ubuntu is very resistant to the junk out there on the Internet presently. To state their is no security advantage using a Linux system for Internet over Windows is not true.

Does that mean I think Windows is a piece of garbage operating system? No. A drawback of Linux is there isn't as much software available out there for the operating system as most software is written for Microsoft Windows.
