to 7800 or not to 7800 that is the question

Current you can see the rig im using down at the bottom in my sig. obviously the graphics card is holding me back from getting much higher graphics settings on games such as Oblivion etc.

My question is would I get the potential out of a 7800. I know its gonna be a huge improvement but would the rest of the system hold back the ultimate performance of the 7800.

Would i be just as good getting something not quite as powerful but getting the same maximum results from the system. I mean its all well and good having the most powerful AGP card on the market but if the rest of the system ends up holding it back from working to its top level, whats the point!

I know some might suggest I jsut go for the top end anyway cos then its there for an upgrade but once I get round to upgrading this system its gonna go PCI-E so not a lot of point

If you would get the 7800 (gs?), I think your system would be able to run Oblivion at least at medium settings. Maybe some higher. Depends on what framerate you find acceptable.

I also heard that Oblivion is processor hungry and you can notice a huge difference between 2.0ghz and 2.6ghz in terms of fps.

this is what i mean, the 7800 gs on a system with a higher spec...say a dual core or a 4000+ would prob give high settings on oblivion

But with my spec i might only get medium settings, yet i could probably get medium settings with a cheaper card so is it really worth going as high as the GS.

Oblivion is incredibly demanding. My buddy has a 7800GTX (PCI-E) and a 3.6Ghz (Intel LGA 775) and he still can't run that game on complete high settings. If you upgrade to a 7800GS I would predict that you would be able to play on medium/high settings. Don't expext full AA or anything though:P

thanks for the input guys but am still wondering about whether its worth going for the 7800GS based on the rest o the components in the system

yes i agree that a good graphics card makes plenty of difference but what im trying to find out is whther its worth going as high as the 7800GS, would i get the best out of the card or would the rest of the system hold it back. I dont want to spend out the best part of £250 for a new gfx card when I could get the same results from one around the £180 mark.

For instance, would I notice a difference between the Gainward 6800gs 512mb and the Gainward 7800gs 512mb bearing in mind the rest of the specs of the system seen below in my sig?

The 7800gs is obviously a very powerful card but it would be pointless to have it if i cant use all its power because the rest holds it back
