MY PROBLEM:
Until recently I could open Google and other programs by clicking their shortcut icon on the bottom-of-screen toolbar or on a desktop icon. Now, in either case, this error message pops up:

"This file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action. Create an association in the Folder Options control"

(" . . . this action" means an attempt to open the file or program.)

FILES / PROGRAMS AFFECTED INCLUDE THESE: http://www.msn.com/, http://www.google.com,
http://www.epson.com,
http://www.whitepages.com/search/Re...id=3016140148170920609&search_type=findperson,
https://mail.deskmedia.com/webmail/src/webmail.php,
http://www.epson.com/cgi-bin/Store/Redirect.jsp?link=printlav&ref=pyi.

I HAVE TRIED to follow a number of the help articles without success.
(From the past, on another computer (May have been Windows 98) I recall associating files was a common part of operating. Now, in Windows XP, Home Edition, lots of helps are offered but, it seems, in general, they say all things one can do, but not much on how to do them. Often the instructions say "click on" such & such, but what they say to click on isn't to be found.

I need a "Geek" who understands what I need to fix and can show me how to fix it. Anyone?
Cheers, Edmu

It sounds like you are just using shortcuts from the desktop. Have you tried to recreate them by right clicking the desktop > new > shortcut?

You can also try this registry edit(try the above solution first if you haven't already). Download the LNK fix extract and run.

Thanks, "Source: http://gadgethelp.net," for the suggestions.

Re THE FIRST: "Have you tried to recreate them by right clicking the desktop > new > shortcut?"
I had not, but now Yes I have. After deleting the malfunction Googe shortcut icon on the desktop, I recreated it, as recommended. Alas, my high hopes that it would be the solution, it was not. The same error message popped up.

Re THE SECOND: "Download the LNK fix extract and run.
http://www.dougknox.com/xp/file_assoc.htm" -- I'm floundering like having entered a strange city with a destination to find ("Download the LNK fix extract and run. http://www.dougknox.com/xp/file_assoc.htm") and can't find any directions for finding it.

I must have missed something re "Download the LNK fix extract." I'm registered in the new program "folkd.com" (from "http://www.dougknox.com/xp/file_assoc.htm") --
It's had me running in circles and jumping hoops. Yet, I'm not finding the way to edit my registry.

Likely you know the error of my ways and can redirect me. Yes?

Thanks again, "Source: http://gadgethelp.net".

I'm in uncharted (for me) waters. winrar is down-loaded and installed. Now how do I employ it to open (activate) "http://www.dougknox.com/xp/fileassoc/linkfile_fix.zip" ?
Below are two items, both of which only serve to bewilder. Please simplify -- or list the steps that will cause the fixing of my register. I suspect it's out of whack.

WinRAR is Windows version of the RAR archiver - a powerful tool which allows you to create, manage and control archive files. There are several versions of RAR, for a number of operating environments: Windows, Linux, FreeBSD, DOS, OS/2, MacOS X.

There are two versions of RAR for Windows:

Version with graphical user interface - WinRAR.exe;
Command line console (text mode) version - Rar.exe.
WinRAR features
Complete support of RAR and ZIP 2.0 archives;
Highly sophisticated, original compression algorithm;
Special algorithms optimized for text, audio, graphics, 32-bit and 64-bit Intel executables compression;
Shell interface including drag-and-drop facility and wizard;
Command line interface;
Non RAR archives (7Z, ACE, ARJ, BZ2, CAB, GZ, ISO, JAR, LZH, TAR, UUE, Z ) management;
Solid archiving, which can raise compression ratio by 10% - 50% over more common methods, particularly when packing a large number of small, similar files;
Multivolume archives;
Creation of self-extracting archives (also multivolume) using the default or optional SFX modules;
Recovering physically damaged archives;
Recovery volumes allowing to reconstruct missing parts of multivolume archives.
Unicode support in file names;
Other service functions, such as encryption, archive comments , error logging, etc.

This command is accessible both in file management and in archive management modes. It converts an archive to self-extracting. If you are inside of archive, there is no need to select any files to perform this operation, just run "Convert archive to SFX" command using either Tools menu, "SFX" button on the toolbar or Alt+X keyboard shortcut and select necessary SFX module from the list. If you browse uncompressed files in the file management mode, first select files and folders which will be searched for archives to convert.

If an archive is already self-extracting, using this command you may also remove an already existing SFX module from archive. In such case WinRAR does not touch the original archive and creates a new archive with the same contents, but without self-extracting module.

If you selected Windows GUI SFX module, which is proposed by default, you may also press "Advanced SFX options…" button to set a number of SFX parameters like the default destination path, a title and window text. Read Advanced SFX options topic to get more information about them.

These topics describe SFX modules provided in the WinRAR package:

GUI RAR and ZIP modules (Default.SFX and Zip.SFX)
Console RAR module (WinCon.SFX)
DOS RAR SFX module (Dos.SFX)
Command line equivalent: command "s"

To Associate a file with a program

Hello "http://gadgethelp.net"
Boy, am I dependent! Following what I think were your suggestions, I question whether I got the proper result. Upon clicking "linkfile_fix.reg" the question popped up "Are you sure that you want to enter this in your reg file". Not seeing an option other than yes or no I clicked "Yes". Another message appeared that it had been successfully entered.

However, I may need to retry. I recall there were two lines showing, the first one not readable for being high-lighted. I clicked on the readable line.

If retrying gives a different result, this note may be unnecessary. However, it will inform you of my tracks. I'll let you know.

To Associate a file with a program

Hello again: "http://gadgethelp.net"
In my retry I discovered that there was no highlighted document, just the "linkfile_fix.reg" the question popped up " I was beginning to report that the results were the same as the first time, when suddenly the activated program window came up. The full scan netted 2292 problems. When I pressed "Repair" it turned out to be no free download that fixes, but a requirement to register and pay up.

I had been contemplating have Skip from Zip or Geek Squad give me "the works". I'm waiting for a word whether their program includes a register fixup. So all's on hold again. Any comments or wisdom would be welcome. Cheers, Edmu
