To everyone:Formatting partitions?

To everyone:

Hello sir. I was the 1 you helped with about the partitions and reformatting Windows Xp. I divided it into 2 partitions. I reformatted 1 and it worked but then the 2nd one failed again half way through. You mentioned something about the hard drive could be bad? Does that mean I would have to buy a brand new one? And also could this have been caused by me trying to reinstall windows or is it impossible to damage a ahrd drive by just deleting stuff and reinstalling windows? Thanks a lot for the help and please respond ASAP

Sometimes if you can do a low level format, this will correct any problems with the harddrive. If you look around for software, you can usally find some utilities that allow for LLF's from the drive manufacturer.

However, we can't just single out the harddrive being the problem. It could be your CD-ROM, the disk, power supply, or other hardware problems/conficts...

All in all, it probably is your HD, though, and about anything you do would result in loosing your data.

Yes...I don't care about the data cuz I want it emtpy so I can reformat but is it possible to actually ruin my HD so I would havta buy a new one just by deleting stuff and trying to install windows? Or would it have to be physically damaged? Thanks and please respond ASAP

Did you format the second partition during the Windows setup or after it was installed? Did you try removing the partitions during setup and re create them?

:) hi....
lefzfans.....
okie my opinion.....u can try to right click on the partition...and format it either NTFS os FAT32.....

You probably didn't damage the hard drive by trying to redo
it.

How large is the harddrive that you have now? (20gig, 40gig, etc)
What kind of harddrive is it? (Maxtor, Western Digital, etc)
How large is the first partition the works?(2 gig, 10 gig, etc)

If the first partition is large enough to install windows
and the applications then you will still be able to
use the harddrive. You might consider shopping
for a new one but you could probably get by with
the one you have for awhile.

If the first partition is large enough to install windows
then you can try to format the other partitions once
you get windows reloaded.

It is a 20 gig and usually stops at about 25% but then after it does that I get the blue screen which says:

DRIVERS_UNLOADED_WIHOUT_CANCELLING_PENDING_OPERATIONS...
PARTMGR.SYS

So I have to restart computer which cancels the whole formatting thing? So I dunno how to get past this screen or what it means or what to do? Thanks a lot and hopefully you can help me out

What kind of harddrive is it? (Maxtor, Western Digital, etc).
Did you get the first partition to format and if so how
large it?(2 gig, 10 gig, etc)
If you got the 1st partition to work have you installed XP on it?

I dunno how to tell what kind it is but its 20 gig and I made it into 2 partitions...I tried to format the 1st one and it stopped at 25% then gave me the blue screen which I stated above in previoud reply and then it did the same thing on 2nd part of partition at about 35% so I can't install windows XP because that screen comes up and I don't know what its from or how to fix it? Please help!

Ok lets start at the beginning. I know this is frustrating but
it has to be done a certain way to try and get it to work.

You need to get the first partition to work no matter what
the size. If you don't get the first partition to work then
the second partition doesn't matter so basically FORGET
about the second partition until you get the first partition
to work.

I'm assuming that you made two equal size partitions.
Since the drive is 20 gig then two equal size partitions
would be 10 gig each. If you take the 10 gig partition
and multiply it by the 25% that you say it is getting to
then you would have 10 x .25 or 2.5 gig partition that is
trying to format correctly. You could then change the
1st partition size to 2.5 or less and try to partition it.
If it works then the first 2.5 gig of your 20 gig drive is
ok and then you could install xp then mess with the
other partitions.

If the size of your original 1st partition is less than 10 gig,
lets say it was only 4 gig then 4 gig x .25 = 1 gig which
would not really be big enough to install xp effectively.

Let us know what the size of the first partition is that you
are trying to install.

The easiest way to find out the kind of drive is to look at
the label on the drive itself.

Ok I will try this...it was a 20 and each was 10gigs so I will try to lower it to 2.5 and see what happens...I will get back to ya with details soon...thanks

If it works at 2.5 gig go ahead and try to install the xp. If it
doesn't change it to 2 gig and try again. If it doesn't work
at 2 gig then your drive will most likely need to be replaced.

I will check in again tomorrow morning when I come back to work.

If you have any more questions tonight I'm sure someone
will jump in to help.

Good luck

Ok I did it and it worked. But now my hard drive is only 2.5 so I have 500 megs free space? How do I get more of the aprtitions on so I am able to use more then the 500 free megs? Someone please help me here...thanks :D

Goto START
Control Panel
Administrative Tools
Computer Management
Under Storage click Disk Management
Towards the bottom you should see some unpartitioned space.
Break it up into at least two partitions and try to partition
it.

What you are trying to do is find the part that won't
partition.

So lets say the first partition you set to 5 gig.
Try to partition it. If it doesn't work then try the second
partition which would be (20 gig - 2.5(1st) - 5 (2nd) =12.5).

Try the 12.5 gig partition.

If it works then the problem is within the 5 gig partition.

You could keep making the 2nd partition
smaller and the third partition bigger until you found out
what the smallest size 2nd parition is the problem. That
would allow you to make the 3rd partition the largest.

Think of this like a video tape. You have an 20 hour tape
and you think part of it is bad but you don't know how
much.

You know the first 2.5 hours is ok. But you know that
after that it is bad but you don't know how much. It
might be the whole tape. So you fast forward thru the
next 5 hours (this would be the second partition). Now
you try the next 12.5 hours of the tape (3rd partition) to
see if it is good.

Good luck.
