To LCD or Not LCD That is the Question

I’m thinking of upgrading from my 21” CRT to an LCD monitor. My CRT still runs great but it is very large and LCDs are supposed to look and perform better for the most part. The only problem is that I like to game and I’ve heard that even the best LCD can’t compare to a CRT when it comes to gaming performance.

I’ve read a lot of good reviews on NewEgg about the Samsung 226BW (if you get the “S” variant anyway) and was wondering what you guys think. Should I retire my trusty CRT in favor of an LCD? If so, what do you guys think of the 226BW? I don’t have a really strict budget and from what I understand, when it comes to monitors, you get what you pay for. I would imagine that this is especially true when it comes to gaming performance.

Thanks

get a 5ms lcd around 19 - 22" with good resolution and contrast. also check the angle movement so you can adjust some arent as good as others.

About your concerns with a CRT being better for gaming I can only disagree. My lcd monitor is so much better than my shitty ol' CRT. :D

In fact i'd probably cry if someone stole my lcd and i was forced to play on the Tube. :o

Thanks for all your responses. I have a few more questions.

Should I get the 226BW from NewEgg and risk getting the “C” or “A” variant? It’s about $30 cheaper there than at store.

I have an ATI built X850 Pro, but I’m having trouble finding out if it will support the 226BW’s native resolution of 1680x1050 and still perform well. It’s not in the documentation that came with the card, ATI’s website and my Google attempts did not yield helpful results. Anyone know how I can attain this information?

Since you’re not supposed to change the monitor’s resolution, I’ve heard some people say that older games will not support widescreen monitors. How will this affect me? I love to play older games.

I’m told that this monitors 2ms response time is only grey to grey and that it’s “true” response time is actually 6ms, should I try to find one with 5ms or better?

I think someone put crack in my coffee, I’m not using a 17” CRT I’m using a 21” CRT, an HP Ergo 1600 to be precise. I have amended my first post to reflect this.
