i have a question, i have a 200 watt ps in my computer iam running an amd athlon(please dont laugh iam trying to upgrade).i want to upgrade it with a 450 watt ps, is this going to fry my mobo and cpu and all that? thanks

The PSU will only use as much power as your system requires...having too much power is not necessarily a bad thing...but why spend extra for power you aren't going to use? Unless the price is reasonable as it is, go for it :)

But just because it is 450W PSU dosen't mean it is a good one...Check the voltages/Rails to see if it's a good PSU. If you don't know what I'm talking about, read PSU101 as it will answer all of your questions:

Nothing is gonna fry. Actually high power cases are not always a good choice unless you are going to load your PC with lots of cards, heavy gaming graphics card, many Hard Disks, CD-ROMs, DVDs and so on.

If you are having an over loaded case, then you should get a high powered one. On the other hand, if you are having a low powered case, 200W or 250W and keep buying extra components and plugging them into your case, you might end up frying your PSU itself as it won't be able to withstand the increased amounts of drawn current and will smoke after a while.

If you are just using normal things and devices in your case, then no need for a high powered case, otherwise, consider high power for future upgrades and buys.

Huh? The computer will only draw as much power (or try to) as it needs ...

However theres nothing wrong with matching a high powered case with a low-power-requirement computer. Furthermore,
  1. "High power" isnt a measure of how good a PSU is -- hell I can find a 350W PSU that will easily take on many 500W+ setups
  2. Good PSUs arent usually all that cheap and "high powred" PSUs arent always that expensive.
