So my grandfather said he'd have the heater control valve replaced on my jeep(this is the 3rd we had to get...) He picked me up in his Acrua and on the way to the shop we started talking about it's GPS. "Yeah, I might get a new DVD for it around the end of this year. The module's under your seat." So I checked it out.

The GPS has it's own DVD-ROM! I figured you'd just use the in-dash player and download the data to an internal flash or HD...

So lets see here, this car has a 6 disk changer, a DVD player(that can play music CDs) AND the GPS DVD player... Hah, I wonder if it could play a movie as well ;)

i'd rather see a car with a single optical drive, and a hard drive installed into the head unit, so you could simply install the gps disc onto the HD, as well as rip all of your music onto it.

Yeah, that seems like the more viable approach: but then again, optical drives are much more forgiving to bumps and all than hard drives...

I guess what got me more than anything, I got a new GPS with apparently 1GB built in. So far it seems to have more "hot spots" built in than the Acura, and it too is a map of the whole US.

I took my Nissan XTrail back to the dealer the next day after buying it. I slotted the SatNav DVD into the Music player and nothing happened

He then showed me where the SatNav DVD player was (in a lift up compartment I thought was where the passenger airbag was) :o

And no, I tried a movie and it didn't work. I wonder how hard it would be, if at all possible to get it to play movies.

While I'm in a ranting mood, when the car was purchased in 2005 the mapping was already 3 years out of date and because it is ONLY available through Nissan it costs £220 for a new 2006 DVD

I was looking at alot of in-dash GPS units, but they all required a GPS DVD in the drive in order for it to work, so I couldnt use a CD or anything while using the GPS.

I'd prefer an internal hard drive and a DVD drive.

The aftermarket indash units look insanely ghetto, anyways.

They look like if you sneeze toward them, the hinges will break, and you'll have yourself a $2k paperweight.

Give me a map anyday, easy to use and they don't break down and cost a ton. Plus they don't look horrible on the front dash board.:P

But with a GPS, you can find out where you are if you get lost and there arent any signs around :P

Plus it's easier for long trips to just enter in the destination and have it tell you and how you how to get there, then looking at the map every so often.

Haha, GCR, my GPS has made entirely new routes because I missed turns or went different ways due to traffic or what not. Though I guess if you hit a traffic jam, you have time to sit and study your map :P
