what toold would you use for building a comp, would a normal person have them around the house

Depends what kind of person you are, I know i have. :D

they have alot of stuff there that i dont, should i get that?

You won't be needing any special tools just to make a basic build, a couple of different screwdrivers and that's about it really.

Kits like that is good to have in case you need to perform any special tasks along the way, a cutting plier for example is good to have for any technical work. :)

lol :)

I built (well, it's actually more like assembling!) my machine and I believe I needed a screwdriver. Just make sure to discharge yourself (from static) before touching/working on your components else you might damage them.

damn stright, i used one screwdriver of medium size for the whole job. Pliers may be handy for some finer connector but not essential. And as for earthing your self just put your hands flat against something big and metal eg, your fridge, or your pc case

Re earthing... Connect the power supply to the powerpoint on the wall as normal, but leave the power switched off at the wall. This will "Ground" the case of your PC(provided your case is metal).

Then just make sure that you always have the bare skin of a hand/arm/elbow/etc touching the metal case of your computer BEFORE and while touching the Cards & Memory etc.

as long as you make bare skin contact to the case, you will both be at the same potential, and that's all you need... it is not critical to ground to the actual earth's potential...

just curious- has everyone ever actually damaged anything by not grounding themself? When I first started building computers I didn't know about grounding yourself (this was like 6-7 systems ago) but I never damaged anything.

i unwrapped my CCFL light's power cord while it was plugged it accidentally. and it touched the case, made a big pop and the case sparked and left a black mark. computer rebooted...but nothing was damaged.

i use a screwdriver, pliers, and a voltmeter while i'm building a computer. Some tape is handy to get wires out of the way temporarily. i jsut hold the case the whole time, i don't mind it.

My question still stands- and I loved your little logo- the paper clip guy :D

lol sry, totally skipped the original question.

i've not used anything out of that kit before when building, but that might jsut be me. a soldering iron is a very handy tool, flashlight also is handy if you don't have good lighting, other than that i probably have already/don't need the rest of what is in the kit.

should you buy it? well if you've got $40 that isn't going to be missed, it's a handy little kit and i'd go for it.

but if you're like me and you don't have $40, you can make do with household items and a little creativity to get the job done. better yet borrow friend's tools, or get an older used set from someone. $40 could get you an entire tool case at a pawn shop or sumthin similiar.

Sorry- should have specified the question I meant- the one about damaging components from not grounding yourself is the question I was referring to.

No I can't say that I have.

When I first started building computers I didn't know about grounding yourself (this was like 6-7 systems ago) but I never damaged anything.

As long as people don't touch the component all over they're usually fine, It's all about common sense really. :)

what toold would you use for building a comp
Two screw drivers, one set of pliers, a flashlight, a gripped set of needle noses and a flat set of broad pliers ... of course in a pinch ... one screwdriver.

Does it count if the damage occured to someone else? :P
