Toshiba Laptop A100

Hi All computer Knowers.

Please help!

I don't know what it is, may be its the prevailing heat wave, my Toshiba Laptop A100 has gone mental:

One moment it says; 0MB free(i.e. no free space at all)
Another moment it says: Low on disc space
Then another: 209MB free of 37.1 GB and so on and so forth

And that is DESPITE the fact that I have virtually deleted almost all my documents including photo files and performed all the updates and disc fragmentations.

I am at my wits' ends and unable to save any file, not even a small one. However, it sometimes feels a bit generous and allows it, but then not knowing as to how it might react I have to hold my breath when I come to pressing the save button.

Lets have your comment, thoughts and suggestions please, before the Laptop suffers a full-on heart failure and becomes a dead casualty.

Regards,

How big is the hard drive? Go into disk management and see how the drive is partitioned. Can you post a screenshot of it?

Many thanks for responding.

The hard drive is 36.1GB. Sorry, unable to post a screenshot since the file exceeds the permitted 19.5KB.

Regards.

Something is wrong then because you get a 120 gb drive when you buy it new. Most likely the drive is just partitioned wrong.

Get the screenshot, upload it photobucket and link the image in your reply.

Sorry, I still cannot manage to send the snapshot------web says ‘above permitted volume’.
However this aside, I am somewhat confused. For when I click on “My Computer” I see two drives: Drive C and Drive E. Now, call it a bit of foolishness on my part, a bit of frustration with my sick Laptop and then a bit of temptation to experiment a little around the computer, I transferred most of files I could see on Drive C (to free up space) on to Drive E with the following results:
Drive C : 4.08GB (an increment on previous value) free of 37.1GB and
Drive E: 24.1GB free of 35.9GB.
The file-transfer apparently has made computer relatively more serviceable, as I can now save files as well as do things here and there more confidently. But, the computer remains as slow as ever. And despite the existing pseudo euphoria , I get this gut feeling that the computer will, sooner or later, require a complete installation. However, my computer skills are not admirably great and in footballing terms, can be described as equivalent to a 3rd division football team. I therefore do not have the confidence nor the courage to launch myself into the unknown, unless of course, I have a step by step jargon-free guide to carry out the procedure. Perhaps yourself or someone looking-in could care to provide one. I should be ever so grateful.
The computer came with the following discs:
Product Recovery,
Windows Vistas (Windows Any Time Upgrade),
Microsoft Works 8.5.
With regards.

Do you know how to screenshots? Open disk management. press alt and prtscn at the same time. Open paint, press ctrl and v at the same time to paste the screenshot inside paint. Then save the file as a jpg. You should be able to either attach that to your reply here or upload it to photobucket and give us the link to it.

Most likely you just need some general maintenace done on it to clean it up. But not a lot can be done if you have a drive smaller than the 120gb that should have came with the system. It may be better for you to find someone that works on computers in their freetime and possibly only charge you $40 or so to reinstall windows.

I guess you are right. I had it better looked at, as you suggest, by an external source.

Many thanks for your time and effort.......and a bit of teaching.
