A quick one guys, would i loose data and files on my hard drive if i changed the motherboard on my p200 satellite laptop.

thanks in advance

You wouldn't lose them as they are on the hard drive.

If you're changing the motherboard though, it's best to do a clean install of the OS you're using, as it helps save any problems in the future with compatabilty and stability.

I'd back everything up and then install the new MOBO, then install the clean OS, then put all your files back on.

I switched mobo, cpu, and ram about a year ago and couldn't load windows XP. a quick fix for that was installing a fresh copy of windows on my spare hard drive, downloaded the drivers I needed and set my original hard drive as a slave. once I backed up the files I wanted to keep I revesed the hard drives, formatted, XP'd, and transfered files back.
I don't know if this was a one time problem or a fequent problem with mobo swaps but at least hard drives are non-volatile so trying wont erase your files(until you format).
if you want to save your programs though you might have to use a backup program if they cant be transfered.

Thanks for all the replies guys, a friend of mine is having problems and asked the question about the data loss, i was,nt sure but i guess, you have all answered the question, so thanks again. he is having it all done by pc world (UK) where he bought it and it is still under warranty, problem came from not booting up.

thanks again

chris
