Hey Guys:

Got a laptop that just one day up and began not displaying anything on the LCD. It turns out if I put a flashlight on the screen it DOES in fact work. I'm thinking backlight/inverter?

Any ideas? Also tech support thinks software could shut off backlight? Ever hear of this and if so how the hell do ya turn it back on?

thanks in advance-
Tom

SUZUKIGSX1300R08:

After reading some of your posts it looks like you have replaced some laptop screens and/or inverters. I am fairly convinced this problem is the inverter/backlight as the laptop is now running fine off an external montor and if you look at the screen with a flashlight you can see evrything clearly but it's just dark.

Could you give some advice on me doing this job? Where might be the best place to find the inverter/backlight? Anything special I should know about installing this new part? I have taken apart a few laptops in the past to replace various components but never the inverter/backlight. Finally how can we tell if it's the backlight or the inverter?

Thanks
Tom

Well, like you said if the image is dim but still viewable im fairly convinced that this is a bad fl inverter board. Now, you could try replacing this yourself as im sure you could handle it. But if this is not the case and the bulb has gone, you will need to replace the whole screen :-\. Also, have you checked that little button that the screen closes down on to make sure that thats not stuck in the closed position? That little button dims the screen when you shut it. That could also very well be the issue. Pop off the strip up top above the keyboard near the screen and see if thats the issue. But to remove the inverter board remove all screws around the trim of the screen, they may be under pads. The inverter is towards the bottom of the screen, a long chip board. Get the model number off that and contact anyone who sells toshiba parts and you should be golden. Sorry for not seeing your message on here earlier.

Thanks much for the reply,

I think I'm ok in doing the "fix-it work", and I will certainly check that button, but how will I know if it's the inverter board or the bulb?

TIA
Tom

Well if youre still seeing a dim image im guessing its the board. Try replacing that first. The reason i say this is because if you are seeing a dim image then i dont think the bulb is getting enough power. The board converts dc voltage to ac power and by the inverter being busted its not getting enough juice to keep running the bulb. Oh i forgot to mention when you replace the board, remove the screw in it and unplug the cables from both ends.

Tanks large, buds.

We're going to go ahead and order the inverter. One thing that's happening is when we switch from a CRT to the LCD the backlight does flash on for about 1 sec then dims. I guessing that's the board?

Thanks again for all your help - I'll let know how we make out-

All right yeah, check back in. if you get a bit of light then yes, its the inverter. Unplugging the crt is probably charging the system for a second and then it gets back to normal. Good luck
