total power and max power??

if a psu has total power of 350w and max power of 420w....what does that mean

it means basically what it says, it will idle at 350w, but is maxed out at 420w

I'm pretty sure that means it can push out 420W but it can't sustain it. 350W is the max draw it can handle full time.

420w is more of a, "Please don't fail if I need this for a very short amount of time". 350w is maximum sustained output.

it's a 350w power supply, i wouldn't count on it for more than that

Cromewell and diduknowthat are correct. It can sustain 350W, and deliver up to 420W for short periods (usually less than a minute).
