Touchpad just quit

As the title says, my touchpad quit just a few minutes ago. I was working on it, and suddenly, I couldnt move the mouse anymore. In the beginning it looked as if I was opening a heavy app like Photoshop. The laptop was slowing down, the mouse moving slower, shocky, even disappearing, and then it just stopped moving. I'm using an usb mouse now, which works.

I'm talking about an Acer Aspire 1644WLi, about a week old.

I already tried a system restore, and deleting/reinstalling the touchpad drivers. I'm gonna try a virus scan tomorrow aswell.

Anyone might have an idea? I hope it isn't a hardware problem..

send it to acer... to get repaired... probably a loose ribbon cable if anything.
I was working on a few last week

Return it to the dealer/vendor now while it is still under dealer's warranty. They give you an immediate replacement. I wouldn't be surprised to see a bad connection or pad causing this. But let them decide on that after you get it back to them. Being that new you should have no trouble getting it exchanged as long as you don't tamper with the unit itself.

What the hell?! It just started working again, without me doing anything!

I still wrote an email to Acer about it, and thanks for replies.

AND THEN... IT STARTED AGAIN! It is probably going to turn out to be a continuing problem. In fact it may be a problem seen with the model itself as Hairy Lee was mentioning. Plan on having a plugin mouse onhand if you don't bring it back for repair or replacement.

Probably a faulty touchpad... Check device manager if it gives out again. See if there's some ! mark on anything. You could also try and restart the machine and see if that helps... Perhaps even just reload the drivers.

Yeah I already did that ;)

Well I'll see how Acer replies to my email, and I'll take it in if it happens again

It could also be the mouse.sys file not being loaded correctly causing a problem there. In the device manager you would look under the "mice and other pointing devices" listing to see if any yellow exclamation marks are seen if and when this problem appears again. Do you have a recovery disk? You should have one there in order to run the system file checker. With the disk in the cd drive you would type "sfc /scannow" at the Run prompt off of the Start menu to see if any system files are in need of repair or replacement.

Note: At times the reduction of hardware accelleration can help with pointer locks.

Well actually, that's another thing I wrote Acer about, there were no disks included (except for MS Works 8.0), that isn't normal is it? A friend of my bought an Acer aswell (slightly different one though, but still Aspire 1640 Series) and did get some Acer disks. My box was still sealed though.

Anyway, I can't remember seeing that exclamation mark you're talking about (I used device manager to remove/reinstall the drivers), even though I wasn't paying attention to it, I think I would've noticed it if it'd been there.

if you do end up sending it in it might be me repairing it lol
Lol, you'll leave me a note right?

lol... maybe.

the not having disks is now commonplace. you should have been given the option to burn your restore cd when you started the machine up. There should be a hidden partition on your hard drive that will allow you to restore your system to its factory state. if i remember correctly you have to push Alt+F10 together when prompted at POST... however this option needs to be enabled in the bios in order for it to work

Yes I did burn those recovery disks. And I also saw that partition, I can go back to factory settings (aka reinstall Windows) by using Acer eRecovery.

But then how come my friend did get some? She was also given the option to burn those recovery disks.

With no recovery disk included on a preinstall that would be another to bring it back in and complain. You should have seen the factory disks along with the recovery disk on a new unopened unit. I'd be asking "Where's everything?". That's a goofup on their part.

some older models come with recovery disks... all new ones dont have them. basically it means people cant moan when they loose their disks and it helps cut overheads. its up to you to burn them when you first use the machine or when you reinstall (although im not sure about that because i only deal with restoring the hidden partition in work).
Get into contact with the vendor; i also believe that its possible to download the restore disks from acer taiwan but i haven't been told the url that would allow you to do so.

Well I got mail back from Acer today telling me they don't include cd's anymore, as Lee said. Concerning the touchpad, I can shut it down/turn it on by pressing Fn+F7, so it may have been that, although I can't remember having done that.

As for those recovery disks, I burned them after installing Windows, so that should cover it all right?

Well thanks for all your replies!

As long as you downloaded the correct updates for your model including board drivers and the correct recovey tool you should be ok.

if you made the disks when prompted everything should be fine.
Alt+F7 does indeed turn the touchpad on and off
