touchpad problems

I’ve got a Dell Inspirion 3000 with Windows 11. Why does my touchpad work perfectly some days, then other days it’s extremely erratic – it locks up and clicks on things without user input? Thanks

I’m troubleshooting a touchpad problem. I’m trying to figure out if I have a hardware or software problem. Here’s some screen shots of my drivers. Is this normal? Should I be looking for a different driver, such as Synaptics SMBus TouchPad? Check out the driver date (2006) on my current driver. When I update the driver, it says the best driver is already installed. Thanks

To add to the question (and I want to be watching the thread :) )

When did you first started to see this issue?
It looks like this machine had Windows 10 originally, is that the case and if so, when did you upgrade to Windows 11?

What is the service tag number so we can look it up?
Does any of this help? Thanks

Device name DESKTOP-P95S78T
Serial Number: 76998R3 (Service Tag?)
Processor 11th Gen Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-1135G7 @ 2.40GHz 2.42 GHz
Installed RAM 8.00 GB (7.74 GB usable)
Device ID 00356-02707-31895-AAOEM

I bought the computer new on 12/13/22, and started using it on 7/18/23. I don't remember doing it, but I found this info saying it was upgraded to Windows 11 on 2/21/25. I did not document when the touchpad problem started, so I can't say when the problem started. Thanks

For reference and a quick link, you have this Inspiron 15 3511 laptop

When the erratic movement happens, does it happen when the computer seems to be running harder than normal?
Thanks for the link. I assume I should look at the CPU percent on the Task Manager to see how hard the computer is running. I tried that and never really noticed an abnormally high percent, but I'll watch that. Thanks

Can someone that has Windows 11, and a Dell, send me a screen shot of their Device Manager/Human Interface Devices/HID compliant touch pad/properties/driver tab? Here’s mine, that says version 2006 is the latest. The screen shot I took of the church's HP has an Elan driver. I can’t believe there’s not a newer version being used for mine. Thanks

Generic device drivers won't have anything newer such as dvd drives. Unless you have a specific touchpad that allows for special things then the generic driver will suffice.

You don't need to use SupportAssist for the drivers (it's a pain)

I looked on Dell's website and didn't see any specific drivers for the touchpad. You may want to go to this link and it check automatically for updates.

Johnb's link is direct to the drivers.

These two may help:

Dell Touchpad Firmware Update Utility
Intel HID Event Filter Driver

But I wonder if it's the touchpad itself... does the touchpad looks a little bulgy?

Can you try a Linux LiveUSB and see if you get the same issue?
