Tranferring files

How do you transfer files from one location to another location?

The reason I am asking is because I live in two different states and would like to transfer files from my one house to my other house from time to time without having to drive all the way back and forth when I might have forgot something I need. I play a lot of games with friends but not always keep them on both computers.

Software: If you can keep the computers on or get someone to turn it on at the other location when you need it to be on, then you could set up a darknet just for your computers. This should allow you to securely move your files, however the transfer speed is only as good as the internet connection you have on the computers.

Or you could use Dropbox.

Hardware: Take the (external) hard drive(s) with you.

remote software like realvnc enterprise works well. ftp server might be the only thing ya need. if ya do your homework ive had mine set up with wol (wake on lan) and could even turn the computer on from say someone elses home outside the network. its another adventure. im sure its been talked about here. it also had something to do with lights out managment. lom
i had notes for setting this up and will have to find it. ive been wanting to set it up again. i do remember i did it from another site remotely. turning on computer several years ago. tlarkin brought it up again recently and forgot. if i find the info i will post it. its an interesting project.

Thanks

I have everything at the one house on a server that is setup to run all the computers at the house. The one at the other house is a laptop with not much storage. I have the server set with a remote desktop so I can access it when I work local but how do I when i am two or three states away? Still getting use to messing with the networking part of all this computer stuff.
