I have to copy all this info on my current 500gb hdd, and put the 130gigs on the 500, and put it on this 250gig.
the 250 has info and an OS on it, but theres space for my other hdd.

Now.
I am using windows backup found in system tools.

I selecting all info on this computer, and sending it to my E: *250gig*

Is it good?

and how do i format a drive?

Is this method saving my 130gigs and transferring to my other drive?

Thanks

AFAIK the Windows backup creates it's own compressed files, sort of like a zip. I would have just transferred the files using Windows Explorer. How do you plan on accesing the files once they are on the 250?

To format, right-click on the drive in My Computer and select Format. BE SURE that the drive has nothing you want to save and that it is the right drive!

First of all your 250gb drive is already partitioned and formatted in order to have any OS running on it. You will have to right click on that drive to see the pie chart indication of how much space is in red(free space available) and blue(space already used for data/OS). If you have note "more then" 140gb in red(free and available) you can choose to copy and paste or use the Windows backup tool for saving the 130gb of files to it.

Leaving drive space free insures enough space is available for use by the OS on the 250gb drive itself for virtual memory. That's where hard drive space is used to suplement the physical memory installed on the system. For copying and pasting folder with the files in them you simply open two explorer windows and highlight the files/folders to be backed up and right click on the total when you see them change color. You then choose the "copy" option and bring the mouse pointer over to the second window opened to the 250gb drive. Once there right click again and choose the "paste" option to see both files and folders copied to that drive.

For formatting a drive with an existing partition you can simply right click on the drive's icon in MyComputer or Windows Explorer. This will delete all data currently on the drive however. For a new drive when first installed the article at the following link is a good reference to keep onhand. http://www.svca.org/articles/hd_utility.htm

I dont wanna format the 250gig.

Windows' backup thing keeps failing, due to space lol.

Is there something else?

Acronis, the $50 software i bought, used, worked perfrectly...well tech support isnt answering there phone. So ill call tomorrow.

Thanks

Open two explorer windows and use the "copy+paste" method. That's a direct copy from one drive to another. As described you simply highlight and right click on the hightlighted files and folders to choose the copy option. Then you simply go to the second window opened to the other drive or destination and right clilck again to choose the paste option there. It's a simple solution that doesn't cost any money.
