Transfer old hard drive to new computer

I've just bought a new computer than runs windows 7. Can I install the hard drive from my old pc that ran XP into this new machine?

I want to be able to copy a number of files from the old hard drive but unfortunately the old PC has died.

Will I also be able to transfer things like contacts from outlook and any saved emails? What about copying across bookmarks from internet explorer?

Could I use any of the programs installed on the old hard drive or do I need to reinstall them on the new machine?

Thanks in advance for any help.

Yes you can put that drive in your new system however any programs would have to be reinstalled. As far as your data goes, normal files like picture, music, and the like won't be a problem. However, you said emails. What program did you use to view emails? Copying your favorites/bookmarks over won't be an issue either.

You would have to reinstall that program and then import the .pst file from outlook onto the new drive.
