Transfering/Cloning Vista

So I want to transfer Vista32x from my old HDD to me new one. I've heard Vista can be a beeyatch or self-destruct. I've also heard cloning is a way around it. any help?

Basically, you make an image of your drive with Ghost or similar software and write that image to your new drive. The exact process to do it will be in the instructions for the software you use.

That still won't work. Vista bonds to the hardware too much and won't run correctly later. That was recently tried out here where Vista wouldn't even load. A reformat and fresh install of Vista on the clone still saw problems forcing Vista to be installed on a totally new primary. There's also no option like seen in XP to perform a repair install.

You'll end up seeing this is counterfeit copy of Windows being displayed or the installation simply won't run properly. You may even be unable to see Vista load up. It's the way the hardware profiling is in the new version over XP there.

If you are planning to clone that from an older ide drive onto a sata that's definitely out. I tried that already simply to save data off one drive when going to see that removed on the current build. Lately even the slightest change in the hardwares like seeing an external drive unplugged requires reactivating XP.

For seeing things go well with Vista I have to recommend a clean install on a fresh partition. Once Windows is running you can replug the old drive in for file and setting transfers to see the best results.

I'll have to pm Cromewell on a new beta tool being worked to explain some of the problems with Vista when trying to preserve a previous installation.

ive done it with vista one time, it worked fine, but i used an actual cloner, not an imaging program. i did not even have to re-activate

If the drives are not the exact make and model... oops! MS enhanced the product security in Vista to fight piracy with an even better hardware detection/profiling process while making it easier to reactivate Windows if you have to reinstall it for some reason.
