Transfering Itunes

I need to buy a new hard drive for my computer because my current one is dying. I need to know if I plug in my Ipod into an empty Itunes program on a freshly formatted hard drive, that the songs will: a) dissapear or b) transfer into the new Itunes from the Ipod.

I believe if you set your ipod to manage own music that you can transfer whatever songs you want over to the new hard drive. I'm not sure and haven't tried it but i've heard something like that.
