Transferring Files online

Hey guys/gals,

Pretty sure this is in the wrong spot, so please redirect into the right spot, thanks.

Basically i have a bunch of files that i need to give to a few people online. I was wondering what are some choices i have for transferring these files.

Let's say i want to transfer approx 5GB of data to 3 people. Email will not allow me to do so. So what are my options?

Free options?
Safest options?
Easiest options?

I thought about MediaFire, i have heard it was pretty good and easy, it's just that you need to pay for it. So before i do, i was wondering if anyone could give me more options.

Thanks for your input :)

Thanks Linkin, But it's just the same as MediaFire. Probably a bit better, as it's an application, but still have to pay for it.

Might have to bite the bullet on this one and reach into my wallet.

Hope you had a good Christmas and New Years Linkin..

Tremmor --> what's FTP?

File transfer protocol.
Ya run a ftp server on your computer.
They use a ftp client and you give them access to a drive
or directory. Assign them a name and or get there mac for access and
assign a password for them that is acceptable to you. You can authorize
a write (upload) and authorize a download.
Its another adventure and yours.
I bought yrs ago but not used in years.
Heres a freeware section that has it here.
http://www.computerforum.com/180799-freeware-list.html

You need the server software and they need the client software for the ftp authorization.
You also have to authorize the ports used and do the same with the router for access.
they have to be open. Normal would be 20 and 21. Suggest ya don't use it. thats the norm and first to check for hackers. Up in the 5000 range would make sense. think it goes that high.
Maybe 5001 and 5011. something similar. been a long time but a start.

Something else. when i did authorize for family and friends with a subscribed time frame.
Say Wed from 8:00 in the morning till 8:00 pm at night. then shut it down. Does not require a server like ya think Your computer can do it. and still use it. i did for years. I would just turn off the ftp server part. nothing changes.

ports to avoid using. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/832017

Any torrent program will do the trick easily. The advantage of this type of transfer is that you will not have to upload it to any server before your friends can download it, thus saving some time :D

I would use FTP. FileZIlla is a good *free* client to use. If you want a little better then go CuteFTP.
You could create a torrent file using the files you want to share, but you would need to up it to a tracker

The first 5gb's or it might be 10 is free on dropbox. So, no need to open your wallet just yet. It's a breeze to use too, I have one. You can just login and upload them to your public folder, and send the links to whoever, or you can just install it to your computer, and then just drag the filed over to your dropbox folder, and it will auto upload it for you. Good choice imo.

And ftp is nice, but WAY over kill for something this simple.

using torrents are illegal Briilee and cause many problems that people have been having like virus, backdoors, malware and other stuff which you don't want on your PC

using torrents is NOT illegal, using them for piracy IS illegal... torrents were actually invented for use in businesses and office buildings to transfer files and share business files with everyone. If what you share on a torrent is free and/or personal, then your in no way breaking any laws.
not to get off topic, sorry

I know what you mean, wasn't trying to correct you or come across crappy, for that i'm sorry. And yeah they were, interesting stuff huh? It's a pretty old technology that just recently picked up popularity (5 to 7 years ago) in the pirating community
you cant write anything to torrent files or they wont hash correctly, that's why pirates use them. very safe for viruses, unless they person who made the torrent included a virus of course

yes quite popular for people who infect peoples computers with virus/malware i think it is because when you download the torrent the antivirus can't tell if there is a virus in there while you download i think. so it makes it easier to infect the pc
