Hey, I have a Canon Elura 65 16x Digital Video Camcorder and transfering the mini Dv's to my computer is driving me crazy. First of all, I bought the FireWire cable today and I have Windows 2000 on my computer. Ok, so I plug the firewire cable into the computer and camcorder and it says found new drivers and all that jazz, and then nothing happens. I though some program would come up allowing me to view my video or something but nothing happened. I downloaded the software that came with the camcorder but the software seems like it dosn't have anything to do at all with movies, Its all for digital pictures and what-not. I have been looking all over the internet for a program allowing me to transfer and view my mini dv's on the computer, but everything is made only for MAC or Windows XP...CAN ANYONE HELP ME, I HAVE BEEN WORKING ON THIS FOR LIKE 4 HOURS NOW AND I'M STARTING TO GO BLIND FROM LOOKING AT THE COMPUTER SO LONG... Would appreciate any replies, thanks.

You'll most likely need to use a video editing software to extract the video saved on the Tape and bring it to the computer. If you had Xp I'd say use movie maker which is not bad especially considering it's free, but there are some others out there see here. Pictures are recognised by the computer because they're compressed and encoded as AVi, TIFF, GIF, etc. but video, especially on tape is not the same.

Use Windows Movie Maker, it will allow you to capture video from the camcorder/miniDV at up to 720x480 (DVD Quality) @ 2.1mbps.

Thanks jjsevdt, would you reccomend a particular one from the list you gave me?...I downloaded the one called "wax" but still nothing is happening, and there is nothing on the Wax program menu about extracting my video to the computer...Also am I supposed to turn the camcorder on or charge it while I am doing this, because I dont know why its not working. I tried turning the camcorder on after I connect it with the firewire, but STILL nothing happens. Im not sure what to do on this one. You guys seem to know alot about this stuff so I would really appreciate any more replies, thanks.

It's not really going to notify you about what to do with the video. I personnaly use Movie maker, but you said you're using win2k and I don't think it's available on 2k. I like wax and you can use that but I checked cannons website and according to the manual of the software that came with the camera there's an export option. You'll export the video to your computer and save it as and AVI or MPEG.
After that import it into WAX and you can edit and play. You'll probably have to manually open the software. Also check the website there was an update to the software as of Sep06 make sure you have the latest. Later

I think I found the problem...I have a firewire port on my computer but I dont have a Firewire card installed in my mother board, so today I'm going to buy one. The thing I'm wondering about, is why when the first time i pluged my firewire into the computer, it said "found new hardware" and stuff. You would think that if there was no firewire card in the computer, then it wouldn't have said anything, but w/e...Btw, do the firewire cards usually come with software too?
