this is my hijackthis log.
I have read about cftmon.exe being a worm, among some other strange stuff here. Not sure what to do.

cftmon.exe can be used by malware, but the file in your log is fine. It looks like your troubles are from downloaded program crackz.

Download the trial version of Spy Sweeper from Here

Install it using the Standard Install option. (You will be asked for your e-mail address, it is safe to give it. If you receive alerts from your firewall, allow all activities for Spy Sweeper)

You will be prompted to check for updated definitions, please do so.
(This may take several minutes)

Click on Options > Sweep Options and check Sweep all Folders on Selected drives. Check Local Disc C. Under What to Sweep, check every box.

Click on Sweep and allow it to fully scan your system.

When the sweep has finished, click Remove. Click Select All and then Next

From 'Results', select the Session Log tab. Click Save to File and save the log somewhere convenient.

Exit Spy Sweeper.

Then restart the computer and post a new Hijackthis log.
 
here's the log. Spy sweeper got rid of one trojan, two keyloggers, and some type of hidden text thing.

Anything that I don't want running in the start up - (e.g. the start up tab)
-any programs that check diagnositics on my command (i.e. sound card, dell help and support, ect..);
-all spyware programs except MS antispyware (the others I run once a week and I just let MS antispyware run in the background);
-I stopped ctfmon from starting up a couple days ago (should I let it start up?);
-I also stopped all software programs like adobe and similar programs not essential for system functioning from running in the backgound when I'm not using them. (many programs automatically put themselves in the startup list, and if they're not essential for functioning I don't let them start up)

That's about it. I haven't taken anything off the start up list in msconfig unless I knew what it was (except cftmon). I also disabled adobe gamma loader a while ago on the advice of a friend (good idea?) I do music production with my pc, so I'm constantly looking for ways to speed things up. Should I post a screen shot of my msconfig start up list?

Close all open windows and browsers, and hit "Fix Checked".

Then restart the computer and post a new Hijackthis log.
 
I was able to run housecall this time, although firefox dislpayed error messages a couple times saying I needed to reload the page, which slowed things considerabley, and trendmicro claimed I was having issues with a slow internet connection, yet I run at around 24Mbps. The output said I had a bunch of random spyware and a generic trojan but it wasn't able to delete any of it. I'm pretty sure I was able to delete most of it manually via this path:

No more problems, just one question. Through the university I'm attending, free virus sofware is offered - CA eTrust Antivirus. I've been using it for just over a year now, but it seems to miss a lot. How is this software relative to some other virus software (excluding Norton and McCafee, which are basically viruses themselves)? For instance the full versions of panda and trend micro.

I wouldn't bother spending the money thanks to online active scanners, but I'm curious nonetheless.

I have windows firewall that comes with SP2. This is a picture of the firewall settings window.
I've heard that having multiple firewalls can be bad for your system.
I've also heard that windows firewall is one way, which is not as good as two-way.
Should I try and disable the windows firewall and install the one you've recommended?
