I bought a windows 7 disc for my XP laptop, it installed the program then would not take the product code from my "crashed" win 7 desktop computer. Then I was unable to get back into XP every time I tried to restart it I went to the product key information screen. So I rebooted in safe mode and now it goes to the screen that says "system preparing for 1st use" then goes back to safe mode, that's all I can get. I cant even get to the product key screen if I wanted to. Please help

You can't physically upgrade from XP to windows 7. A fresh install is required. However, what is your system specs on the XP machine. It may not be worth upgrading to 7 on it. Also, you can't use an OEM key from one system and use it on another system. If you bought a windows 7 disk then it should have came with a key to use to activate. If it didn't then you got took.

I cant log on to my machine so I dont know what the specs are, I bought the disc and it installed the win 7 they told me when I bought it that I would need my Key, thought the one off the other machine would work. When I did the Microsoft diagnostics it said my machine would be ok for 7 it is 32 bits. Can I get back to XP ?
Thanks, Deano

You would have to wipe the drive and install XP. Also, is it the same version of 7 on both pc's? A windows home key won't work for a pro install. Did you enter the key correctly? OEM keys?

I dont know if it was the same version. I entered the key correctly, I guess it wasnt compatible. So now how do I wipe the drive ?

Thanks Deano

Use the install dvd to delete all partitions and install new OS. How much did you purchase this install dvd for? Any sealed OS install cd will have a key attached to it to activate.
