Triple channel memory

Hi,

I am using a Core i7 mobo it supports both dual and triple channel connection to memory.
Right now I have 3 gigs (3x1gb) and have one slot free. What happens if I pop into the last slot a 2gb memory, will it work fine, wont there be any negative impact on the speed of the memory? Or is it better to get a 6gb (3x2gb) memory.
I am asking because the 2gb is significantly cheaper.

I'm not totally sure to be honest. I know with dual channel intel boards support asymmetric dual channel (typically seen in machines with 3GB of RAM). Though I'm a little confused as my new laptop with 3GB RAM shows its running standard symmetric duel channel. Eh, whatever...

In your case, I'd say go for the upgrade if you need the extra RAM. There's typically not a huge performance hit when going from different RAM speeds. I've seen some benchmarks showing only about a 10% difference max between single and dual channel configurations.

Is that the gigabyte ud3p?

I can't say to performance - but that 4th slot is in single channel mode.

I almost bought that board - but the additional single channel was what swayed me to get the UD4P with 2xtriple channel RAM.

The_Other_One: I dont need the memory just yet and believe I wont for another year. I was just curious what happens if I use the last slot instead of buying new complete set of ram.

Jamin43: I own UD3R, something very similar to UD3P I guess.
I went for this one since it was cheaper and I realized 3gb of ram was still plenty. I never needed more memory so far, my maximum usage was always below 90%.
