I was looking into upgrading to a i7 920. just a thought, im not sure.

I currently have 2x2gb of ddr3 g.skill ripjaws. could i buy one more 2gb stick (ddr3) and call that triple channel, or do I have to buy a certain pack of ram that comes with 3 sticks?

It really depends on the motherboard. I've seen some that could work with three similar sticks and others that required three identical sticks. My guess...as long as you could find a stick very similar (preferably the same brand/speed/chips/etc) you'd probably be alright.

It's worth giving a shot, because triple channel is expensive and I dont want my 4gbs to go to waste.

The motherboards run in dual channel too. If you're tight on cash - you should be able to run your system on Dual Channel if you want to. I haven't yet seen any significant performance analysis between dual and triple channel - although maybe in the future that will change as new apps come out.
