Trouble connecting via FTP

I am having some problems connecting to my ftp sites. I have Win XP Pro, and have tried BladeFTP (which has worked until recently), and recently am trying FileZilla.

I have tried to connect with my main host on dreamhost.com, as well as ftp with both Angelfire and Tripod.com. Until recently, I was able to connect without problem to these, and others. Recently, something happened, so that when I click on the ftp host, and click connect, all it does is hang. It never connects, not even giving me a welcome message.

Is this a port problem (I usually connect in port 21)? I am not a very tech person, so I will need the "layman's version."

Does it hang with ALL of those programs, download and try the latest "SmartFTP"...

Sounds strange, you might try restarting your router aswell, just in case.

All FTP programs

I have this problem with FTP programs, only. As I mention, I have used BladeFTP for the past couple years. I tried clicking on the update tab, but it appears that BladeFTP is no longer in biz. I also checked the site I originally downloaded from, freewarefiles.com, and it no longer appears to be there...

That is why I tried FileZilla, but even though I'm using a new program, even it can't connect, and as I said, I'm trying 3 different FTP hosts.

I have no probs with connecting to the web (Explorer/Firefox), Real & Quick Time work, etc, etc. It's only a prob with FTP. I use Comodo Firewall, and it says that the program's ok (isn't being blocked). Not sure what else to try.
