Trouble copying files to a DVD+RW

Hi, sorry if the following sounds dozy but I have only recently got my computer which includes a DVD writer which I am not used to. Simply trying to back up some data files by copying straight to a DVD+RW (If I understand their use - its bigger than a CD and I can record over to provide an updated back up say next month). Tried 'copy', and 'drag & drop' but each time I get a message saying "Windows encountered a problem in copying". My DVD player plays DVD's fine and I have copied other picture files to a CD-R sucessfully. Before I go back to Dell is it something very simple that I have missed doing? I haven't formatted the DVD+RW disc as I understood they don't need it (bought on line) is that right? Any thoughts please.
 
Thanks ok, I have a prog called Roxio pre loaded by Dell. Had a look at it and sadly I'm confused. Obviously the bulk of its help etc is directed to copying Video/Audio. Really don't know how to copy (sorry burn ) my simple data files onto a DVD disc. I can do that right? Where do I start? Sorry to be a dumb pain.
