trouble enabling windows welcome screen in winxp

Hi, i am trying to enable the windows welcome screen, when i go to user accounts and change the way users logon, i check the box next to use the welcome screen and apply settings, but when i restart the welcome screen still does not show and when i go back to change the way users logon, the box is unchecked again, it seems as if my settings are not being saved for some reason, any way to fix this?

Either a networking device has changed the way windows logon works or you have other issues. Have you installed any new network adapters on this machine?

Be very careful about some of the ways to try repairing it as it involves editing the registry.

Is there more than one user on the machine? If there is only one user and the .NET account was deleted, then it will not show the welcome screen. If there is more than one user or the single user has a password in place, then the welcome screen will display.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon\

will allow tweaking (carefully) the logon variables, including putting up a message
