Trouble installing video cards

I'm having a hard time getting a monitor to look good with a different computer we hooked up
Computer is a Compac Presario 800 MHz with an on-board monitor plug in.
It has a Nvidia G force 2 300MX video card.
I hook it up to the video card and monitor will not work. The on-board plug in works but only 2 and 16 colors. Installed driver off net twice and still no good.

Also I tried to help my nephew out with his video card. His computer wont work with a new video card. I don't know the computer or card to tell you the specs of that set up.

QUESTION IS:
Can installing a monitor or video card that hard or am I just having bad luck.
I read something on the net about constant frequency video cards.
Are these cards reacting negatively with the monitors??

yeah, disable onboard video in your bios. then shut down and install the card. don't be upset id the display looks bad with the new card, you still have to install the drivers for it.
