Trouble installing Vista

Hey everyone, I'm having troubles installing Vista on my..ahem..roommates computer, trouble is, when I put the Vista disc in and boot off it, it starts loading the install, but locks up before I can even get to the options. Every time. It even does it when booting the cd in windows XP. It is an older computer though, but I woulda thought it would be compatible.
specs are as follows:
P4 @ 3.0 GHZ
2GB of PC3200 RAM
8 HDD's totalling 1TB or something
Integrated Intel GMA 82865G

I'm about to look up the motherboard model and see if it's Vista compatible.

My guess it some sort of incompatible hardware, like the motherboard. Any ideas?

Ok, updating the bios didn't help, but I unplugged the sata controller card and the wifi card, and now it seems to be working. I hope the sata controller works in vista...

Vista installed fine, but it still freezes occasionally. I'm pretty sure it's tied with the pci sata controller, cause when I unplugged it it ran great, no freezing at all. It works fine in Vista though, which is odd. Maybe it's on it's way out...

Also can't find a sound card driver, but that's not too important as it's a server..

If you are looking for file server why not just use Linux? Then run samba and windows file shares can go right to it?

I would suspect that the card you pulled out may not be supported and when it tries to PnP it, the OS locks, or it is defective in some way.

Well all the hard drives are recognized in explorer, and it's fine in device manager. I have a feeling it's defective in some way.

I would use Linux, but then I'd have to relearn another OS:P
Plus my previous attempts at Linux turned out...less than prosperous.

Well you won't ever learn if you don't try. Effort counts for a lot you know. I could easily show you how to set up a file server. It is insanely easy.

You would be surprised that once you learn the basics everything else clicks in place.

Thats true, and I thank you for the suggestions and help offer, but the bottom line is this isn't my computer, and I know the owner of it wouldn't have the patience to learn linux.

As for me, I have tried it. It hated both my computers, so I eventually gave up on it. I did go through a short lived linux phase, believe it or not:P (hell, I've been through a mac phase as well:D)

Cool, Windows update got me a sound driver. Looks like I'm good to go then. It hasn't locked up in a while too (knock on wood)
