Trouble playing games and video files

I am having a problem playing video files on my windows 2000 system. The computer works fine until I try to play a video file with WMP then the system stutters and goes into slow-motion. If I press ctrl-alt-del the video starts to play but as soon as I return to the player, it stops and goes slowmo again.

When I try to go gaming ie: oblivion, Brothers in Arms, etc, the game will start and then freezes requiring me to reboot the entire system. The system used to play the game with no problems.. Is my display card on the way out.. Its an AGP geforce 6600.

I wouldn't think it's your card although it's a possibility. I would first check if it's a software problem. You may have a virus, or spyware.

If you already have a anti-virus program, good, just make sure it's up-to-date and did a full system scan. But you need an anti-spyware one too. I recommend a program called "ad-aware". You can get the free versionhere

argh, sames happening to me. your system probably isnt getting the power it needs. i installed a geforce 6200 and that started to happen so i called tech support and they told me thet my psu wasnt giving my system the power it needs. what kinda ratings do you have on your psu? i wanna know the wattage as well as the voltageon the 12 volt rail. i assume you can find that info, its right on the power supply.

Originally had a 550w psu but kept getting a message that my card is not getting enough power. Changed to a spare 400w psu and the message has dissappeared but the problem hasn't. Checked the options on oblivion and it was running at the lowest setting with meduim quality. Have several anti-spy and anti-virus software programs installed and have run them repeatedly as well as disc checks to no result. Have even changed the wiring. I am running: 2x pioneer dvd burners, AMD 754 3200+ CPU, Gigabyte triton motherboard, 2x 200g seagate SATAs, 1024mb RAM.

have you tried updating the grafic's card's drivers?

edit: also, does your motherboard have that 4 pin connector somewhere close to the CPU? (square connector with 4 pin's)

i mean that connector on the right upper corner,.. next to the 4 black squares. If you have it.. please, make sure its connected, else the processor doesnt get the power it needs.

Have downloaded and installed the latest Nvidia drivers and the 4 pin connector ( marked ATX_12V ) is difinitely connected. Is it the ghost in the machine.. Just checked the windows task manager and that is saying my cpu is running at 100% when I am running WMP. When WMP is cancelled, the cpu usage drops to around 2-5%. I think I have found the problem.. But what is the cause?
